For the assignment I compared Jude1:1-11 in four different translations, CSB, NASB,
ESV, and NLT. The CSB was my base translation, the one that I compared the other translations
to. I noticed several similarities between the ESV and NASB translations with the CSB. Their
wording is very similar to each other, although the ESV and NASB seem to be a little “blunter”
with their wording. The NLT was the most different between all of them. I noticed that the
wording in the NLT was “flipped” in several verses in order to make the sentence more coherent
or easier to understand for the reader. The key words were similar with both the NASB and ESV
when compared to the CSB, but when looking at the NLT the key words were many times
synonyms of the key word found in the CSB.
Having the NLT when reading Jude was very beneficial in some verses (3, 5, 9, 23, and
more), as it easily explains what many times may be confusing. It gives a definite answer to what
may have otherwise been a sentence that could hold multiple meanings in another translation.
This comes with its flaws, however, as relying too much on the NLT or other similar translations
may result in a handicap and a desire to not do your own research.
It was interesting to note how different some people view the same passage of the Bible.
For instance, the NLT explains the context behind certain verses inside the verse itself while the
other three translations expect the reader to know the context or the meaning of the sentence
already. The NLT “holds the readers hand” while the other three expect the reader to have
background knowledge of the text or of the Old Testament. It is important to understand the
usefulness of having multiple translations side-by-side when reading a text. It helps to see
different views that people may have concerning the passage. Some translations may focus on
certain keywords while others focus on different ones, some may focus on a literal word-for-
word translation while others on are written in a thought-for-thought basis, and so on. Relying
too much on a single translation may many times make the reader miss certain aspects in the
passage that could have otherwise been noticed.
