Why KING? Samuel was old and his only sons were all bad, and not following in his footsteps.
Samuel was crushed and prayed to God. God said to do what they asked, and to not be sad
because they did not reject Samuel, they have only rejected me (GOD) as their King. Israel said
the needed a king like all the other nations. (yates, 164)
CHOSEN ?? Saul, head and shoulders above the crowd. Saul was a beautiful man. The Holy
Man in Zuph, Samuel, he knew from what God told him earlier that Saul was the man that would
keep God’s people in check. Samuel explains to Saul all that God had told him. Samuel poured
oil on Saul’s head, God anointed you as prince over His people. Saul was what one would call
the peoples choice (Hindson, Yates, 164). Saul was the peoples choice before he was gods
choice. The people despite samuels warning of worldly wanting a king (not god as their king)
wanted saul as their king.
REJECTED?? Saul had a strong beginning (yates165) Saul was warned by Samuel to honor
the Mosaic covenant (bible chapter 12) (yates 165) he did NOT and the kingdom fell very
quickly (bible 13-15 chapters) Saul wanting revenge on the Philistines, didn’t care about his
men (physical needs), he almost cost the life of his own son jonathan (yates 166, bible chapt 14)
DAVID BETTER THAN SAUL? David had a superior character in contrast to saul’s inferior
character. (yates 166) David is better because he is Gods choice (16:1-13) David was in line with
the messianic promise (yates 166) David represented gods choice as king (yates 166) David was
bold and saul was filled with fear (yates 166) Saul tries to attack david (yates 166, bible 18:6-16)
David is very popular with the people and saul is jealous.
SIN SAUL DID TO DIVIDE ISRAEL? Israelites were outnumbered, Palestine’s were
winning. Soldiers were slipping away very quickly. Saul went ahead and sacrificed the offerings
already. BAD. Saul was scared he had lost his Army, Samuel was late. Saul did not follow God’s
timeline and plan. All because Saul did not keep his appointment with God.
