3 Key ideas from the chapter in Courageous Faith
“Whenever we put pleasure ahead of principle, we are headed for trouble” (Hindson, 2003,
p. 124). I found that people tend to put pleasure before the principal of things. Throughout the
entire story it tells how samson continued to put his pleasures before everything. He was simply
to follow the three rules laid out to him, not to eat anything unclean, not to drink wine or
fermented drinks, and to not cut his hair. Though he broke all of these to satisfy his need for
pleasure.
I feel that another key point is that once we begin to fulfill those pleasures it starts a downhill
climb of sins. Like a snowball effect. It is difficult to come back from that type of a spiral. As
like samson, he could not recover from his sin. Once Samson carried out the sin of eating the
unclean lion, he was unable to get back in the right direction. He also did not confess his sins,
which led to more sin.
All Through the readings I've learned that with temptation God will always give us a way to
escape the sin whatever it may be. As with Samson was wondering around inside the grape field,
God attempted to pull Samson away from these sins and temptations by sending him distractions
such as the lion. This story of Samson shows us that God had given him lots of chances to stop
him from falling into temptation and yet each time, but he still chose the path that resulted in sin
and death. God will always provide us with a way if fail and fall short in sin and temptations.
2 Things you learned about this character from your reading in Courageous Faith
During the readings I found that women were Samson’s primary weakness. His weakness
was not apart of the way that God meant for him to travel, but he couldn't walk away from a
pretty face. He was gifted the gift of Gods spirit with the skills to protect Gods people from the
Philistines. He was unable to resist Delilah and allow Gods spirit to strengthen him so he could
rise above it, which cost him everything. In the end it cost him taking his life.
We see that in Samson his life, he was so very selfish. He was so blinded by this both
figuratively and literally by his selfishness that it was not until the Philistines captured him and
blinded him did, he come to realize his this. He finally committed the act of selflessness through
self-sacrifice after the pain and the torment of his sin. This was his way to make right all the
wrongs he had done.

“Each one of us has a window of time to take the way of escape.” (Hindson, 2003, p.
135). I think one way that I can learn from what I have read is to use the six steps to dealing with
temptation. These six steps include: Taking good look at yourself; Honest Self-analysis, admit
you have a problem and confessing your faults to the Father, believe that God can make a
difference in your life, make a total commitment, renewal is a full-time job; live out your new
comment daily, take the “way of escape”. I try and use these steps to bring myself closer to Him
and his word and to better myself as a Christian and human.
