A. Module 1: Week 1
Thread: How to look at the Bible
Learning Log
“In him we have redemption through his blood” Eph 1:7 (Grunewald, p. 5)
This quote reminds me that although we have sinned, through his blood, we can get saved
from sin. Jesus sacrificed his life for us. His death on the cross was a payment for the sins
of humanity.
“We are unable to live the kind of life required by God. We can’t live a life of total
obedience at every turn and at every moment”. (Grunewald, p. 6)
This quote reminds me that as humans we inherit a sin. We are not perfect and never will
be. No one can live a completely sinless life.
“The first eighteen chapters of Exodus tell the story of God’s deliverance of his people
from slavery in Egypt” (Grunewald, p. 10)
This quote stood out to me because it used the word, Exodus. One of my favorite gospel
songs is by Donald Lawerence “Deliver Me”. In the song the singer says how she is
saying goodbye to the old her. Just as biblically the book of Exodus talks about the
escape of slavery in Egypt. Both the songwriter and the book of Exodus is freeing
themselves from something in the past.
“The Greek word for gospel means good news. Paul defined the gospel of Jesus Christ in
Corinthians 15: 1-4” (Grunewald, p. 18)
I have always known the gospel to be good news, but I never really knew that the word
gospel meant good news. This quote was a learning point for me. Now I understand why
Paul task was to spread the gospel.
“Old test law must come through an understanding of God was operating in and among
his people” (Grunewald, p 24)
This quote reminds me that it is important to remember God’s holiness, righteousness,
and love. It reminds me that it is important to show people their need for salvation.
Always remember how God love us.
“We should not be afraid of being honest with God” (Grunewald, p. 25)
God knows everything. God understands when we are wrong and when we are right.
Being honest with God helps draw our relationship closer to him.
“The terms major and minor are a way to divide the longer prophetic books from the
shorter prophetic books” (Grunewald, p. 26)
I had no idea what was meant by the minor and major. The word major is used for the
longer chapters and minor is used for the shorter chapters. This quote taught me
something new.
“The student of God’s word must not read it flatly as if it is all the same” (Grunewald, p.
27)
This quote taught me that different readings mean different things and they should not be
read the same. Certain things require interpretation, and its meaning is impacted by
context. Personally, I thought that the way I read everything else was good enough for
everything.
“Thus while it is important to read the scriptures regularly to receive a sense of direction
for each new day filled with possibilities and pitfalls the Bible is not solely or even
primarily a book about the path to successfully navigating the life” (Grunewald, p. 29)
This quote reminds me that life can get a little rough. No matter what books we read or
what advice is given you will still have speed bumps in life. It is always best to stay
prayed up and do what is best for you.
“This approach to the Bible is strictly focused on the commands of God and is concerned
with duty filled obedience” (Grunewald, p. 29)
To me, this quote means to obey God. When you are obeying God, he is faithful to you.
As you read to understand the word, you should practice obedience.
