“It may be challenging to think through Scripture in these terms because we are so used to our
plans going astray. We dream, hope, and strategize only to be caught off guard by something we
did not foresee happening. As a result, we move to plan B or plan C as a way to accomplish only
a fraction of what we had originally intended.” (Cartwright, p. 4)
I can’t emphasize enough how true this quote is. Countless times have my plans gone off course
in a completely different direction than what I had initially hoped for. I’m the type of person to
overthink everything, so I always have a plan B, sometimes even a plan C. It’s wonderful how
sometimes when the plan goes astray, God puts it back on course in His own way, leading to the
result I prayed for.
The more I think about it, the more it astonishes me. In this chapter, it states how God is never
caught off guard by any of the events that happened, there are no unexpected situations and none
of the actions in the Bible surprised Him in the least. This shows God’s authority over this world,
everything that occurred, all happened according to His plan.
“We are unable to live the kind of life required by God. We cannot live a life of total obedience at
every turn and in every moment. However, Jesus Christ can and did live the perfect and sinless
life. He is righteous. In Christ’s death, God credits us with Christ’s righteous life.” (Cartwright,
p.6)

This quote is a reminder that we are imperfect, sinful, and unrighteous, but because of Jesus’
death, we are forgiven of all our sins. It pains me to think about it but, even after being forgiven,
human beings just continue to sin every day. Day after day we continue to sin and disobey yet
God still forgives and loves us. Now I’m no perfect human, I’ve done sinful things before that
I’m not proud of, but I know that God forgave me. Knowing that led me to apologize for my sins
and not repeat that same mistake, I continued with my daily life, and yes, I still sin, everyone
does, but God forgives us and loves us. The next part of this quote says, “In this great exchange,
we inherit his righteousness, and he takes our sin.” (Cartwright, p. 6) When Jesus died,
sacrificing his life for us, we inherited his righteousness and were forgiven of our sins. I think
that’s amazing.
