The ethical dilemma that Craig Thorn is facing is the problem of wealth over honesty. Thorn
longs to be a partner and he knows to do this his superiors must see that he is contributing a large
financial benefit to the firm. This is where the problem ensues, Thorne is presented with the
ethical dilemma of falsifying his audit report for Allnet and therefore bringing in a larger amount
of money for his firm, providing him and easy promotion to partner.
Craig Thorn is presented with a couple of ethical problems. The first of the ethical
situation is that he is blinded by his own ambition and pride. While having a desire to improve
one standing and promote one’s position in life is not a bad thing doing this through nefarious
means like dishonesty only ensures a dismal outcome for the employee. But he’s ethical
dilemmas do not end there; Thorn is presented with a golden opportunity to promote himself
while increasing the revenue of his firm all one-stroke. But he can only complete this task if he
falsifies his audit report and changes Allnet’s revenue and charges more for his serve then his
actual rate. The Bible talks a great deal about ethical decisions throughout the Old and New
Testament. With characters like David in the Old Testament, who are called Christ-like but in
2 Samuel 12:5-10 are still punished when they act unethically and deceive others and take
advantage of the weak and needy(Bible, 2 Samuel). To other great servants of God in the New
Testament like Paul who in Act 26:14 are chastised and call out for their disobedience against
Christ, the Bible is full of God punishing the unethical men (Bible, Acts). But the story is a
redeeming one, both these men turn their lives around and live a life that is more ethical and
therefore biblically grounded.
While Thorn is in a tricky situation the blessing is that he can escape this dangerous
ground at any time. He can choose to do his job honestly and be rewarded for the benefit of his
honesty, while this might not be the promotion he longs for with his ethical choices in front of
him the promotion cannot be far in the future. Shinde, P. D. writes an article titled BUSINESS
ETHICS & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY in it she goes in to great lengths to explain the need for
ethics in business, in one section she writes “Certain ethical values such as honesty and fairness
are universal and stable over centuries. Such values are applicable to all aspects of life
including business” (Shinde, 1). This is just one author that agrees that ethics inside business lead
to a prosperous future for everyone involved.
Because I am a Christian I will always strives to display Christl-ike behavior. Thankfully
Christ is a very ethical beginning and therefore I strive to be ethical in all my decisions. If the
situation arises for me to act unethically for my own personal gain I would hope that I act like
Christ, and turn down the temptation opting for the ethical and most Christ-like path, the path of
honesty. This would be my recommendation for Craig Thorne, to be Christ like is to be
blameless and this is the road that should always be chosen.
