Introduction
Statistics, as a branch of mathematics, mainly deals with the collection and interpretation of data.
Scientists use various techniques to make conclusions and predictions based on data. Therefore,
scientists use various techniques to collect and interpret data, and data misinterpretation may
occur along the way. Scientists may need to understand the data more due to errors in data
collection, which affect the entire data collection process. This essay will focus on two events
that occurred due to misinterpretation of data: The 2019 Australian bushfire crisis and climate
change and The 2016 US presidential election and voter turnout statistics.
1. The 2019 Australian bushfire crisis and climate change
With the devastating bushfires that ravaged Australia in 2019 and 2020, there was a heated
debate about the role of climate change in worsening the fires. Statisticians should have
understood the data on climate change and its impact on the fire, leading to confusion and
misinformation (Collins et al., 2021). The misinterpretation was that human factors primarily
caused fire, whereas climate change played a minor role. Statisticians cited statistics showing
that human activities cause most bushfires in Australia, and the 2019 fires were no different.
Statisticians also pointed out that fires occurred during below-average rainfall, which they
claimed disproved the link between climate change and bushfires.
Therefore, the right interpretation of the incident was that while it is true that human factors can
contribute to the ignition and the spread of bushfires, rising temperatures, changing precipitation,
and increased atmospheric moisture can create conditions for fire to start and spread (Chester,
2020). The 2019 fire occurred during a period of prolonged drought, which was brought about by
climate change. Hence, the omission of climate change in the fire misrepresents the scientific
evidence and undermines efforts to address the underlying causes.
2. The 2016 US presidential election and voter turnout statistics
During the 2016 US presidential election campaign, there was a contentious debate about voter
turnout rates and the election outcome. Statisticians misinterpreted the statistical data on voter
turnout, leading to misinformation. The low voter turnout in the 2016 election was evidence of
widespread voter fraud and that the election was "rigged" against Donald Trump (Joshua, 2017).
They cited statistics showing that voter turnout was lower in certain swing states that Trump
won, and the overall turnout rate was the lowest since 2008. They also pointed out that there
were numerous reports of irregularities and fraud in the voting process, which they claimed
supported their claims of widespread voter fraud.
The correct interpretation was that while it is true that voter turnout rates have declined in the
United States over the past few decades, this trend is not unique to the 2016 election. Several
factors contribute to the decline in voter turnout, including changes in how elections are
conducted, increased voter suppression efforts, and a growing disengagement from political
processes. The focus on voter fraud and "rigged" elections misrepresents the underlying causes
of declining voter turnout.
Conclusion
In conclusion, even though there is the use of techniques while collecting and interpreting data,
scientists should be more accurate while doing such a process to avoid giving out misinterpreted
information to the public.
