Our team chose the company AMC for this project. We came to this decision
because the Coronavirus pandemic has severely impacted the movie theater industry
and theaters like AMC are faced with several strategic challenges moving forward.
While meeting with the group, we determined we all had a love for movies and going to
the theater. We chose the movie theater industry because it was an industry we were all
familiar with and something we all cared about. Before the pandemic, streaming
services such as Netflix and Hulu were gaining more and more popularity among movie
consumers. The streaming services were already driving movie theaters into a changing
to compete with the coronavirus and several movies being released online for a fee like
“Mulan”. Because of this, companies now know that they can stream the movie and
make money instead of having to go though the movie theater industry. Now that movie
theaters have been shut down for several months, these streaming services are one of
the only ways for movie lovers to watch the latest movies and television shows.
Because of this, movie theaters like AMC are faced with an uphill battle when it comes
to their reopening plans. How can AMC get back to normal, and how can AMC bring
more customers in than their competitors like Harkins Theaters? We have decided to
use the SWOT analysis to help answer important questions like these. We intend to
focus on the internal strengths and weaknesses of AMC as well as the external
opportunities and threats within the industry. All of us have come to the conclusion that
using the SWOT analysis is the best way to tackle this challenge because it covers both
the internal and external aspects of the company. While we are aware that this
pandemic has caused many problems for all sorts of industries, we believe that we can
come up with a strategy to help AMC thrive in the movie theater industry.
