Reflective Journal 2: Skill Development Through Design Thinking
Introduction
My attention has been on developing five critical employability skills over the last few
weeks: listening and interpersonal skills, critical thinking, cooperation, adaptability, and empathy
for the user. Through design thinking, I have focused on understanding consumers’ needs,
generating ideas, and analyzing them based on those needs. Thus, I have enhanced my skills in
explaining concepts to different people and have developed my problem-solving skills, which
help me to decompose complex tasks into smaller ones and provide unique solutions to the users
issues.
I have also learned that teamwork is essential in ensuring a group achieves success. Thus,
I have gained leverage from other people's experiences and ideas by working in different groups,
which led to developing ideas and achieving common objectives. I also valued flexibility, as I
gained the ability to adapt to change and manage uncertainty in the environment. That is why I
can successfully perform in changing environments where I must manage constant alterations
and effectively address new challenges. I can show these qualities when working in a corporate
environment and be a leader, innovator, and changer who brings positive organizational change.
I have created valuable and sustainable solutions by focusing on the user's requirements.
My keen understanding of users' needs has enabled me to design solutions that meet and exceed
their expectations. This is why I have ensured that usability and relevance are the top priorities in
every project. When I apply these abilities in the business environment, I recognize that I can
govern, generate, and build change that will aid the organization in achieving its mission. My
general knowledge and focus on users will be helpful in any type of working environment.
Week 5: Creative Problem-Solving
3
During the current week, ideation methods such as mind mapping and brainstorming
were discussed. For a general topic, we were tasked with generating as many solutions to the
problem as possible during group work. As this practice demonstrated, it enhanced my ability to
critically analyze various ideas and approaches to problem-solving. In the initial stages of the
process, creativity entails many ideas, regardless of the quality of the ideas portrayed by the
readings. One particular instance that came to mind was when we were assigned to address a
typical work-related issue involving sophisticated, distant teamwork. Our first ideas could have
been more creative; we proposed some typical ones. As we moved past the first ideas, better and
more innovative ideas were produced, such as artificial intelligence-powered work management
software and virtual conference rooms. It also showed what a risk it is to stop looking beyond the
surface in the quest for new concepts (Kumar et al., 2019).
This strategy benefits the innovation process in corporate organizations because it allows
for the analysis of new concepts, which may lead to the production of revolutionary products or
services. An example is concept generation of a product's features: proposing a wide selection of
features might reveal new configurations that meet the customer's needs in a new and innovative
fashion.

Week 6: Critical Thinking
My attention has been on developing five critical employability skills over the last few
weeks: communication, conflict-solving, cooperation, adaptability, and focus on end-users. This
is where I have focused on understanding consumer needs, generating ideas, and assessing them
through the design thinking approach. Thus, I have developed the skills of presenting concepts in
simple and understandable language to different groups of people and have enhanced my
analytical skills, which help me to analyze various issues and provide solutions that meet users'
needs in the best possible way. In addition, I have come to appreciate the importance of group
work in achieving the group's goal, as seen in this case. Through the various teams in which I
have worked, I have been able to harness the strengths of other individuals, thereby creating a
good platform for the realization of objectives. I have also learned the importance of flexibility
and am now better able to manage change and uncertainty. Because of my ability to learn and
5
grow, I have excelled in situations requiring me to understand and overcome new challenges as
they arise.
This is because most of my activities have been directed toward users, allowing me to
develop meaningful and pertinent solutions. This paper demonstrates how my skills in user
understanding and identification of their needs and issues have enabled me to come up with
solutions that not only meet their needs but also exceed their expectations. To ensure that
customers are happy, I have endeavored to ensure that usability and relevance are priorities in
every project I have worked on. This is why I can lead, innovate, and make a positive change for
the company when using these abilities in the formal business environment. My general set of
skills, as well as my primary focus on users, make me suitable for making a significant impact in
any working environment.

Week 7: Collaboration
Over the last few weeks, my attention has focused on developing five critical
employability skills: Key competencies include communication skills, critical thinking skills,
teamwork, adaptability, and customer orientation. Thus, I have focused on identifying customers'
needs, generating ideas, and analyzing them by applying the design thinking approach. This
approach has not only improved my communication skills, enabling me to present ideas in
simple language to diverse groups, but also sharpened my analytical abilities, breaking down
complex problems into manageable sub-problems and designing practical solutions that fully
address the users' needs. In addition, I have learned that collaboration is inevitable in achieving
one's objectives as a team. I have leveraged other people's talents and perceptions through group
assignments to foster idea generation and goal achievement. I have also learned the value of
flexibility as one of the most important characteristics; I have become able to cope with change
and uncertainty (Suresh & Kolluru, 2022). This quality has enabled me to excel in fluid
environments where I always had to learn and effectively respond to new challenges.
This week's concepts also covered teamwork through group projects, which required
proper collaboration and communication. As a result, input from each team was necessary to
create the user experience journey map in the context of the given case. Therefore, I instructed
the students to incorporate all their suggestions, recognizing the significance of a process
encompassing many ideas. One of the essential aspects of creating an efficient route plan was
reconciling the two schools of thought in one critical situation. This was necessary because,
during discussions, everyone needed to be serious, which is where hearings and compromises
played a crucial role. Hence, at the end of the exercise, we produced a journey map that was only
possible with every member's contribution. To enhance outstanding team performance at work,
7
teamwork is significant, and much focus is put on identifying ideas brought about by individuals
in the team. This is especially true with international teams, as the different perspectives and
skills enhance problem-solving.
)
Week 8: Empathy and User-Centered Design
For the eighth week, the main point of discussion and learning was the role of empathy as
one of the stages in the design thinking process. In terms of user research, we completed
extensive persona creation to understand our identified target market better. This process
involved gathering data from potential users through interviews and observing their behavior,
then organizing it into comprehensive user reports. It proved helpful to consider and create a
soldier for a middle-aged worker who regularly listens to music while traveling back and forth to
work (Ramadhan & Fitriana, 2022). This was due to our ability to understand her demands and
challenges during the design process, including her desire for the gadget to seamlessly connect to
other devices and provide high-quality sound in noisy environments.
7Empathy and focusing on the user would benefit almost any working environment. They
lead to the creation of products and services that directly impact consumers, making them
8
happier and more loyal. Companies emphasizing user-oriented practice have an advantage over
firms in servicing clients and meeting market competition.
7
Week 9: Adaptability
Flexibility was a challenge during the design sprint in week 9. Some aspects of the design
sprint, such as eliminating fixed concepts and adapting to customers' feedback, were both
challenging and fulfilling. During this process, I understood that change is beneficial, as original
ideas often remain only outlines.
That time was challenging because we were user-testing a new app feature and receiving
feedback on the prototype sample. They required us to make multiple iterations within a week,
including confined iterations with users and new iterations exposed to tests within the week. This
9
iterative process has taught me a lot about persistence in leadership when things go wrong and
the importance of flexibility due to this repeated cyclical process.
Flexibility is critical in today's business environment, where competition is fierce and
consumers' preferences are fluid. If adaptability were preserved, it could eliminate the negative
influence of different unpredicted problems on the projects. Those roles that demand you to
manage a project, lead a team, or manage a complex corporate problem would find this ability
quite handy (Pratomo & Wardani, 2021).
7
Week 11: Prototyping and Testing
In the eleventh week, the issue of testing and prototyping within the context of design
thinking was discussed. We collected user feedback on low-fidelity prototypes and honest people
to get the information. This iterative approach revealed the necessity of using low-fidelity
prototypes, which can contribute to much learning. It was previously believed that high-fidelity
prototypes were necessary to get more detailed information from participants. However, our
10
study demonstrated that low-fidelity prototypes were equally effective in identifying use
problems and gathering valuable customer feedback. This pointed out the importance of doing
frequent testing, even on the low-fidelity prototype, because when problems are found, it is
easier to solve them before they get worse.
Testing and prototyping are critical in the workplace because they help lower the risks
that could be incurred and ensure that the products meet the customer's requirements. Because
prototyping is a cyclical process to some extent, the firm can identify any issues during the early
stages of the development process and, therefore, develop quality and efficient, user-friendly
products. As a result, businesses can learn from their customers, change something, and avoid
costly mistakes by testing prototypes at the start of the business process. This technique improves
the user's satisfaction and the usability and functionality of the final product by better fitting the
user's needs and expectations (Pratomo & Wardani, 2021).
Prototyping and testing are cyclical activities promoting continuous development within
organizations to improve them. To encourage creativity and versatility, they should allow the
teams to come back to them with modifications to their designs based on what the customers
requested. This technique can help teams remain flexible and more responsive to the customers'
changing needs and business environment. It is also essential to engage the users in the early
stages of the creation process because it increases their affinity with the final product, increasing
the likelihood of its success in the market. Based on the above discussion, it is imperative to
emphasize that integrating frequent testing and prototyping into the design process is essential to
11
creating quality goods that meet customer needs and the company's goals.

Conclusion
I expanded the key competencies to include employability skills in creative problem
solving, critical thinking, cooperation and flexibility, user-centered design, and effective
communication, which were provided and assessed in the organization of the unit's exercise and
reflection. Thus, when such abilities are employed in the formal business environment, creativity,
effective problem-solving, and an orientation towards a user's needs can be achieved and help
businesses succeed. Integrating DT ideas into my skill set enables me to effectively solve
complex problems and be helpful to any organization I encounter.
Therefore, the application of design thinking and its cyclical process have nurtured a
growth perspective on learning. Besides creating an understanding among team and
organizational members with shared goals and overlapping membership, this strategy also
enhances human resources skills in teams and organizations. It encourages the creation of new
knowledge and viable ideas. The knowledge and skills I have been taught in this unit will be
essential in achieving the set goals and objectives as I progress in the corporate world.
