My Sun Devil Story
Coming from a small town in South Dakota, Tempe, Arizona, has been a definite and
desired scene change. I have been asked many times, “What’s in South Dakota?” As for the
geological attraction, I always mention Mt. Rushmore or the Black Hills, a truly beautiful place
located on the west side of the state. However, I am from the eastern part of South Dakota,
which is primarily flat and full of fields for farming. This is where I have spent a good portion of
my life. I was born in Phoenix, Arizona, along with my twin brother. My parents separated
shortly after and my father, brother, and I moved to South Dakota. Their separation is something
I was always used to, although some days were harder than others. For a few years, my brother
and I lived with my mom and half-brother in New Mexico, then back to South Dakota. We
moved around a lot with her, so it was sort of a transition when we moved back in with my dad.
Living in the same house for nine years brought some stability to our lives.
My mother and I were not very close over the years, but that all changed when I told her
I wanted to attend Arizona State University. It was a chance to rekindle our relationship and
basically start from scratch. Others in my family have graduated from ASU; however, neither of
my parents actually graduated from college. Seeing the results and difficulties they have had to
endure has been a driving factor for me to get my degree. A goal of mine is to make their lives
better. They are part of what has made me the person I am. The only difference between me
and them is that they have lived a life full of limitations, whereas I feel limitless. I chose to
attend Arizona State University for Business Communication simply because I love it here! I love
the atmosphere, full of possibility and potential, and the people, illustrating positivity and
purpose. I came here in hope that I, too, will find my purpose. And it is here that I feel closer to
my purpose than ever before.
Why business? I chose to pursue a major in business because I think holds a definite
place in the world. Along with communication, it is a constant process that exists all over the
world. People do business for many reasons and in all kinds of ways – some good, some bad.
Those who do business for good make the world prosper. They trade goods and services so that
others may benefit, which in turn, benefits them as well. On the other hand, there are people
who do business solely for self-gain, power, and greed. I think it is important to be aware of
these types of people, for they can be an obstacle in the way of a progressive world.
Similar to those who chose to do business for good, I want to make a positive impact on
others. During college, I hope to strengthen my leadership skills in order to lead a successful life.
In regards to my professional career, I want to run multiple businesses filled with strong,
influential, and ambitious people such as myself that have the same desires as I do. My dream is
to change the world through business. Although, my path is a little unclear, I believe that I am
going in the right direction starting here at ASU. Here, I have discovered that I am a “people
person”. I absolutely love interacting with others. With an open-minded approach, it is easy for
me to engage and understand all sorts of people. Understanding others is the first step in
making the world a better place.
