Advocating for Free Community College Education
There are several reasons why education from a community college should be made
accessible. Giving free enrollment to community colleges may significantly decrease monetary
obstacles to higher education. Some of the general problems that make many potential learners
shy away from college include the following: high costs such as fees, books, and others (Ching et
al., 2020). If these costs are removed, more people across the different strata of society would be
able to attain education beyond the secondary level, thus enhancing access to education and
promoting social justice.
Also, freeing community colleges can help meet the workforce's needs through an
educated and skilled society. In today's highly competitive employment world, many
organizations need professional candidates with the specific skills and knowledge that a
community college curriculum can provide (Mountjoy, 2022). Through this educational
intervention, free community college enrollment would assist in addressing such demands while
empowering people with the knowledge needed to acquire higher-paying positions and
contribute to the economy.
In addition, free community college can benefit society over the long term. A literate
population is generally healthier, has increased political participation, and is less dependent on
state support (Ching et al., 2020). It is, therefore evident that funding education at the community
college level will benefit society's welfare through decreased incidences of crime, better health
standards, and an empowered democracy with citizens who will actively participate in decision-
making processes.
Haters may opine that free community college education would burden the government
budget. Nonetheless, the research indicates that future gains like increased tax receipts from
3
higher-paid graduates and the savings on expenses met through social welfare outweigh the costs
in the long run (Mountjoy, 2022). Furthermore, selective measures, including choice of
eligibility standards or funding strategies, including higher tax rates for the rich, can ease
financial worries while addressing common education concerns.
Thus, making community college affordable is a clear-souled investment in future
employees and an attempt to build a more just and prosperous society. Free community college
education is an ideal that reflects the principles of equity and meritocracy that are the basis of
modern societies by eliminating the cost, driving economic development, and creating solidarity.
These advantages have to be weighed by the authorities, and further measures have to be taken to
guarantee equal opportunities for obtaining a quality and affordable education for everyone at the
community college level.
