The caste system is a traditional social hierarchy prevalent in India, deeply rooted in
Hinduism. This system categorizes people into fixed social classes termed as castes and these are
determined by the people's birth. Historically, it has dictated aspects of daily life, including
occupation, dietary habits, and marriage prospects (Ashfaq, 2023). While the caste system was
officially eliminated in India, its remnants can still be observed today. Its roots are in the Vedic
texts from antiquity, which divided society into different groups, supposedly to ensure the proper
functioning of society and perform specific tasks and roles.
The caste system is divided into four main categories or varnas: Brahmins, Kshatriyas,
Vaishyas, and Shudras. At the apex, there are the Brahmins, who are traditionally priests and
scholars who were supposed to perform religious duties and impart knowledge. Kshatriya, or the
warrior and ruling class, has the duties of protecting and ruling. Vaishyas are traders and farmers,
business and artisan communities (Ashfaq, 2023). Shudras, the fourth and the lowest castes, are
workers and menials. Also, there is another class of people outside the four varnas; they are
called Dalits or 'Untouchables', who were regarded as inferior people and given the lowest Jobs.
Some of these varnas are divided into sub-groups known as jatis, which categorize people
according to their type of work.
In Hindu philosophy, caste is associated with the concept of dharma, or duty. Liberation
or freedom from rebirth is achieved through performing the duties of one's caste to the best of
one's abilities while not being concerned with the consequences. The recognition of caste and
compliance with its predestination is regarded as necessary for both maintaining cosmic order
(rita) and karma (Ashfaq, 2023). These activities, including acceptance of whatever station one is
placed in and performing assigned duties without complaint, regardless of how menial or lowly,
are believed to cleanse the soul and aid in its spiritual development. Therefore, the caste system,

when looked at in a spiritual light, is supposed to lead people in the right direction of self-
actualization and the creation of balance in the universe.
