Types of Religious or Healing Specialists:
The locations may include pastors, priests, rabbis, imams, shamans, holistic healers, and even
musicians in the U.S. These two perspectives differ. Yet, they provide guidance and healing
processes in their styles. For instance, pastors or priests would offer counselling and prayer,
while a shaman would offer healing customs.
Specialists Around the World:
1. Curanderos (Latin America): Witch doctors or doctors who also utilize plants for curing
diseases, spirits, and spells.
2. Sangomas (Southern Africa): Healers are diviners, herbalists, and those who
communicate with the spirits, particularly their ancestors, to heal.
3. Ayurvedic Practitioners (India): Practitioners who maintain and treat the body’s
physical and metaphysical states by diet, herbal cures, and yoga.
4. Use of Altered States of Consciousness:
The practitioners of these disciplines use some forms of altered states of consciousness. For
instance, they use drumming, chanting, or entheogenic substances that put them into trances to
help them reach the spirit world. Sangomas may also use dance and song to put them in the same
state. Ayurvedic practitioners could use certain aspects of meditation and yoga to change
consciousness and enhance healing.
These practices demonstrate various ways of treating an ill person while emphasizing cultural
relativity when it comes to the concept of health.
