Does The Punishment Fit the Crime?
Hypothetical Scenario
An inmate is put in solitary confinement for an extended period, only leaves the cell for a
short time during the day, and only interacts with very few people for months on end. This has
been widely condemned as a form of psychological torture, which is still practised in some
prisons, inflicting severe psychological trauma on prisoners.
Addressing the Situation as A Leader
In my capacity as a leader of that correctional facility, I would change this unethical and
even possibly unlawful practice of long-term solitary confinement. First, I would call on all the
information and evidence, such as the report from mental health professionals about the impact
of this practice on the well-being of inmates (Strong et al., 2020). After that, I would invite the
officers who were involved and their superiors to find out why they were administering solitary
confinement in such a manner. However, it is wrong and represents unethical behaviour, as well
as could be a violation of constitutional rights (Webb & Kelly, 2023). I would consult with the
legal department to make sure that our facility complied with the laws that had been set about the
humane treatment of inmates. The adjustments, if needed, would be made at once, with penalties
in case of non-adherence made very apparent. Additionally, I would initiate mandatory training
programs for all staff on alternative methods of inmate management and discipline that do not
involve cruel or unusual punishment. These programs would emphasize the importance of
upholding human rights and maintaining a safe and ethical environment for both inmates and
staff. Throughout this process, I would maintain open communication channels with inmates,
their families, and advocacy groups to address any concerns and ensure transparency in our
efforts to rectify the situation.

Repercussions For the Officer
The officer(s) involved in imposing prolonged solitary confinement would face
disciplinary action, potentially including suspension or termination, depending on the severity of
the violation and their level of involvement.
