Fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base imbalances are complex topics that challenge many
nursing students. However, mastering these concepts is crucial for providing effective patient
care. To aid in mastering these concepts, one effective nursing mnemonic for remembering the
causes of hyperkalemia is "MACHINE" (Allnurses, 2018): Meaning; M for Medications (ACE
inhibitors, NSAIDS), A for Acidosis (Metabolic and Respiratory), C for Cellular destruction
(Burns and Traumatic Injury), H for Hyperaldosteronism, Hemolysis, I for Intake (Excessive
Potassium Intake), N for Nephrons (Renal Failure) and E for Excretion (Impaired). This makes it
easy for students to memorize the factors that may cause an increase in potassium levels, hence
offering a systematic method of checking the causes of hyperkalemia in practice.
In the nursing field, visual aids are also incredibly beneficial in enhancing the
understanding to learners. For instance, one of
the most helpful diagrams, as shown is the
"Renal Regulation of Acid-Base Balance",
that demonstrates the process in which
kidneys control hydrogen ions and
bicarbonate ions at the same time, providing
the means of regulating the balance of pH in the body. The diagram stresses the exchange of ions
in the nephron and such important stages as bicarbonate reabsorption and hydrogen secretion.
This keeps the learning of the imbalances and how they can be corrected and the underlying
mechanisms easy to perceive when the knowledge is presented on this visual aid.
Moreover, materials for which learners can participate, like the "Fluid and Electrolyte
Balance" on the Khan Academy internet website, present videos with information, quizzes, and
extensive coverage of the topic (Khan Academy, n.d.). These sources are appropriate for
targeting learning modality, thus making it easy for the students to grasp what is being taught.
The use of visual aids, mnemonics and composite tools thus give a balanced learning model that
enhances the students' understanding and retention of overall knowledge in various aspects of
nursing, especially in the aspects of fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base imbalances.
