Application of Statistics in Health Care
Statistics are essential in health care as tools for decision-making, quality improvement,
and policy development about their application and interpretation. Statistics help healthcare
professionals collect data, compare two or more variables, decide on the best course of action
that will improve safety for patients, advocate for health, and support leadership goals. This
paper aims to describe the role of statistics in health care and its influence on safety, health
promotion, and leadership. Finally, to further demonstrate the relevance of statistics in health
care, an example from a journal article and the significance of using standard health care data for
research will be highlighted as well.
Application of Statistics in Health Care
Data and statistics are known to play significant roles in various fields of health care,
such as clinical trials and individual patient care. Epidemiology: Statistics plays a role in
measuring the occurrence of diseases, reasons for incidences, and outbreak control. This
information is vital for establishing appropriate priorities and initiating the desired change in the
community (Nutbeam & Muscat, 2021). Statistics play a significant role in clinical research as
they are used to design the studies to be conducted and to analyze data from the findings made.
Scholars explain that methods like randomized controlled trials (RCTs) incorporate statistical
analysis of results from participants, which is essential in creating new therapeutic and
interventional approaches.
Significance to Safety
Statistics is also important in safety since it helps to improve healthcare treatment
through the analysis of data. Anonymous diagnostic tests are used in clinical practice to screen or
diagnose diseases, and their effectiveness is evaluated using different statistical measures.
3
Sensitivity and specificity are two important factors that are often used to assess the feasibility of
carrying out a certain test. While sensitivity can be described as the power or the ability of the
test to capture patients with the disease of interest, specificity on the other hand is the ability of
the test to be able to exclude patients who do not have the disease (Al-Dmour et al., 2020).
Therefore, through these measures, the providers are in a position to determine the right
instruments to utilize when coming up with diagnosis while, perhaps, avoiding alerts of wrong
diseases in patients and consequently enhance the safety of the patients. In addition, the
strategies applied to evaluate these different aspects include statistical process control (SPC)
strategies. As part of clinical surveillance, SPC assists in pointing toward changes in clinical
activities that can result in adverse outcomes. That is why it becomes easier to identify these
variations once they occur and then address them so that the quality of health care can be
enhanced.
Significance to Health Promotion
Statistics also play a central role in health promotion and intervention, as discussed
below. Sometimes, it is necessary to assess the efficiency of certain programs and interventions
related to health promotion; for this purpose, methods of statistical analysis are applied.
Healthcare providers need to evaluate the information these programs provide to ascertain which
techniques yield the best outcomes and identify the existing gaps (Nutbeam & Muscat, 2021).
This evidence-based approach also helps to deploy resources in the right place. It is also useful in
directing health promotion interventions in the parts of the population that are most in need of
the services. For instance, if the health promotion program is for quitting smoking in a particular
community, then statistical tools can be of great use to determine the specific guidelines that may
be useful in achieving the goal. Successful interventions, such as can be seen in counseling,
4
nicotine replacement therapy, and public education campaigns, can be compared and the most
significant emphasis is placed on interventions that will give a higher success rate and, therefore,
increase the efficacy of the program.
Significance to Leadership
Another important factor relating to leadership in health care centers is statistical
information. Statistics are useful in the formulation of policies, organization of resources, and
planning of strategies that are to be implemented in the future. For example, the actualization of
an efficient infection control measure involves the identification of patient admission and
discharge patterns to department heads to help them decide on the appropriate number of
employees to hire to minimize the time patients wait before being admitted into the hospital.
Flow analysis allows for the design of an organizational chart that is highly effective in directing
patients to particular specialties and guaranteeing the timely delivery of care (Al-Dmour et al.,
2020). Moreover, the use of statistical data and metrics becomes vital when it comes to the
measurement of performance or the execution of quality improvement processes. Outcomes
markers like the patients' satisfaction level and the number of patients who get readmitted are
some of the measures used by healthcare leaders to check the efficiency of the service being
rendered. Much of the data used to define these metrics are purely statistical in nature, but having
objective data helps to determine where improvements could be most effective and what
strategies could work best to improve outcomes.
Example of Application: Journal Article
In the journal article "The Impact of Clinical Decision Support Systems on Medication
Safety: Clinical Decision Support in enhancing medication safety: A Meta-Analysis," published
in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, the authors apply statistical
5
measures to review the impact of clinical decision support systems on medication safety. When
combining data for statistics from different articles, the author of the article demonstrates how
essential statistics is for healthcare assessments on a broader level (Jia et al., 2016). Two
statistical ideas discussed in the article are confidence interval and p-value. A confidence interval
is a range in which the actual value of the population parameter is likely to lie, which aids in
determining the reliability of an estimate. At the same time, the p-value reflects the significance
of the null hypothesis, and, in general, the lower the p-value, the less likely that the results could
be obtained due to chance. According to a meta-analysis of the studies, there was substantial
evidence that CDSS significantly reduced medication errors, with a 95% confidence interval and
p-value of less than 0. 05, which explained the degree of statistical significance of the results
obtained. The above example shows how statistical analysis can be used to support the
effectiveness of healthcare interventions.
Importance of Standardized Health Care Data
It is impossible to overemphasize the essence of data standardization as far as the
healthcare field's reliable data is concerned. Standardized data ensures valid comparisons and
utility of results from various scientific and healthcare settings. This means that it is essential to
check if data collected from several sources are in a format that can be meaningfully compared
and combined for analysis. Standardized data are relevant and essential to ensure that research
findings are valid and reliable (Nutbeam & Muscat, 2021). When data is collected, for instance,
in a healthcare study, and the same data is reported using the same methodology, researchers are
sure that the differences recorded have nothing to do with the data-capturing techniques but are a
result of variations in health status or treatment programs. This reliability is essential to establish
6
evidenced-based guidance and policies which can indeed be adopted system-wide throughout the
health care domain.
Moreover, it enables the handling of large amounts of collected data and leverages big
data techniques. By adopting of standardized data, researchers are able to pool responses from
different sources, hence enhancing the statistical power by increasing the sample size. It helps
provide more accurate estimates of the treatment effect and health outcomes, making the
conclusion more real and generalizable.
In conclusion, the application of statistics, as well as using the result of statistics, is very
crucial in health care. Statistics can increase correct diagnosis of patients and control clinical
activities that improve their safety, investigate the strengths and weaknesses of interventions that
protect and enhance the health of people, and support leadership with problem-solving methods
that apply quantitative evidence. A particular emphasis is made to underscore the importance of
adherence to standard healthcare data and the feasibility of the planned large-scale data analysis.
It is evident that the use of statistics is becoming increasingly crucial in health care even as the
health care industry expands and shifts its focus towards providing better and more efficient
treatments for diseases and illnesses.
