Last week you read an article by Suzel Reily describing Musica Sertaneja as an example
of country music’s international influence. By way of contrast, this week’s article by Don
Curtis discusses obstacles that country music has faced in developing its international
1. Describe some of the reasons that the author gives for country music’s limited
international reach in the UK.
There is a difference between country music lyrics and the culture of Great Britain,
socially clothes are very different, and politically country music is synonymous with
the Republic Party ad George W. Bush.
2. The article does note some exceptions, particularly from female country artists. List
some of these artists and describe why they have been more successful than some other
artists.
Shania Twain, LeAnn Rimes, Emmylou Harris, and Faith Hill. These women were a
lot more popular since they had integrated a pop vibe into their albums, and instead
of pushing their records to the UK, they concentrated more on women’s hits and
singles.
3. The author makes the point that in the UK country music is viewed as having a strong
connection to the American Republican party. Do you believe that this perception is
accurate?
Although I do have many friends who are more democratic than listen to country
music, I do believe in the perception of country music in the UK. Country music has a
strong following within the Republican party and many artists, especially the older
ones, sing more about what Republicans support rather than what the Democrats
support.
4. Other than the countries of North America and the nation of Brazil, find another
example of a nation or region where country music has been successful commercially.
Give an example of a country artist from that nation or region (a youtube video is fine)
and briefly describe the factors you perceive that allow country-western music to flourish
there.
a. I think another country where country music is popular in New Zealand. One
of my favorite country artists Keith Urban originated from there.
b. (129) Keith Urban - Blue Ain't Your Color (Official Music Video) - YouTube
c. Country music was once one of the biggest genres of music in New Zealand. I
think why country music is popular because, like North America, New
Zealand is very laid back, rather than Europe. New Zealand has a lot more
land and the countryside does. As a result, I think it is easier for the people of
New Zealand to relate to country music lyrics.
