Mid-Course Reflection
Since the beginning of the term, my understanding of total rewards and organizational
design has deepened significantly. Initially, my knowledge was quite basic, but through the
coursework, I have gained a better grasp of how data-driven decisions enhance compensation
structures and overall company competitiveness. For instance, learning about the importance of
pay transparency and ethical decision-making in HR has been enlightening. The SHRM article
on updating compensation strategies reinforced the necessity for transparency and data-backed
decisions to maintain equity and attract top talent. Reflecting on my strengths and weaknesses; I
have observed both alignments and surprises compared to my initial journal entry. I have
confirmed my analytical skills as a strength, especially in interpreting data to make informed
decisions. However, I was surprised to discover a weakness in time management. Balancing
extensive readings and assignments has been challenging. The Learning Goals Inventory
checklist highlighted my need to improve my organizational skills to manage my study time
more effectively (Khan et al., 2019).
What has been particularly interesting is the practical application of theoretical
knowledge in real-world scenarios. My data analysis and ethical decision-making skills have
evolved, particularly in maintaining transparency in compensation. Challenges have included
keeping up with extensive reading material and applying theoretical knowledge to practical
projects. Assignments that required us to simulate real-world HR scenarios were the most
beneficial, providing hands-on experience. In contrast, some theoretical assignments felt less
engaging without practical context.
Regarding my goals, I am on track but need adjustments. My primary goal is to develop a
solid foundational knowledge of HR practices, particularly compensation strategies. Setting

specific study schedules and using tools to track progress will help me stay on top of the
coursework and continuously enhance my understanding.
