Using the Power of Media to Influence Health Policy and Politics
Media plays a vital role in influencing health policy and politics. It shapes the opinion of
the public and acts as an advocate for particular health-related problems. The increased use of
communication and digital information technologies have sgreatly changed how people focus on
enacting effective communication with other individuals and supporting movements or aspects
that push policy makers to pass potential laws that consider better healthcare outcomes (Buse et
al., 2023). There are several ways in which the power of media can used to enhance health policy
and politics. Multiple media outlets establish their messages with multiple social media
platforms to efficiently reach the users and instill a positive impact that is critical in
policymaking. Besides, legislators have a role whereby they tweet and frequently utilize
Facebook, and launch blogs to connect with the public and relay their voices. Therefore, social
media is a great tool that nurses can incorporate in their practice to shape health politics and
policy.
Moreover, the use of social media, and other forms such as radio, and television is vital to
educating people on potential healthcare problems. This can facilitate action from policymakers
and ensure that appropriate policies are implemented to address the healthcare problems
affecting people. Media can be used to launch advocacy campaigns and at the same time
mobilize the public toward demonstrating their support to health reforms and policies. This can
encompass using viral videos, hashtags, and other digital technologies to engage a massive
number of users. Additionally, media coverage is a crucial way to examine health-related topics,
which can make politicians and policymakers to work toward the allocation of adequate
resources that can assist in addressing several health topics (Daniels et al., 2013). Also, this
facilitates a better understanding of various health issues affecting people in the community.

Thus, the media can hold multiple stakeholders, such as private organizations and government
agencies, accountable following the process of implementing a health policy.
Also, television and radio can be utilized to communicate health messages about health to
the users and policymakers. Mass media has facilitated health promotion campaigns since it
reaches a massive audience and promotes healthy social change. Nevertheless, political
operatives have established multiple sophisticated approaches to target and segment particular
electoral districts to ensure that policymakers present a deciding vote on an essential bill. In
addition, the internet facilitates information sharing and collaboration, which have significant
implications for health politics and policy (Daniels et al., 2023). Therefore, nurses can present
their perspectives and become advocates of policy change, including using social media to
develop and distribute messages, discuss various issues affecting patient care, and collaborate
with others concerning an issue.
