A Day in the Life: My Smartphone Usage
When do I start?
My day with my smartphone starts as soon as I wake up from bed. It even acts as my
alarm clock and wakes me up at 6:30am with a melodious ring. Even as I wake up from bed, I
automatically start checking for calls, voicemail messages or emails that might have come in
during the night.
What am I doing?
My smartphone is on me for most of the day, helping me with my daily tasks. I wake up
early and I use it to look at the weather and news headlines as I have breakfast in the morning.
While commuting to work, I either listen to the podcasts or an audiobook. In my workplace it is
mainly a secondary means of communication where I occasionally type shorter messages and
answer calls while I am not at my computer.
At lunch I can be scrolling through the accounts I follow on social media or responding to
personal messages. During the afternoon, I might use it to check my fitness app or monitor the
water intake. In the evening, it becomes an entertainment device for streaming music or videos, a
tool for online shopping, or a means to stay connected with friends and family through video
calls or messaging apps.

When do I stop?
The last interaction with my phone typically happens around 10:30 PM when I set my
alarm for the next day and perhaps do a final check of my social media accounts. I try to put the
phone away at least 30 minutes before sleep to improve my sleep quality, but I admit this isn't
always successful.
How many times a day do I check my phone?
Reflecting on my usage, I estimate that I check my phone at least 50-60 times a day. This
includes quick glances to check the time, responding to notifications, or deliberately using an
app.
How much time/day do I spend engaging with my phone?
When I total up all these interactions, I'm surprised to realize that I likely spend around 4-
5 hours per day actively engaging with my smartphone. This doesn't include time when it's
passively in use, such as during phone calls or while listening to audio content.
My impression of what I just discovered about myself:
This self-reflection on my smartphone usage is eye-opening. I'm amazed at how deeply
integrated this device is in my daily life, from the moment I wake up until I go to sleep. While it
undoubtedly enhances my productivity and connectivity, I'm somewhat concerned about the
amount of time I spend engaged with it.
I realize that my smartphone has become more than just a tool – it's a central part of how
I interact with the world. While it offers incredible convenience and access to information, I
wonder if this constant connection is always beneficial. Perhaps there's value in creating more

phone-free periods in my day, to allow for uninterrupted focus and to be more present in my
immediate surroundings. This exercise has made me consider how I might strike a better balance
between leveraging the benefits of my smartphone and ensuring it doesn't dominate my attention
and time excessively.
