Introduction
Australia faces a significant number of contemporary social problems. One of the
outstanding problems is sexual misconduct in the workplace. According to the Australian Bureau
of Statistics (2023), 1.7 million Australians experienced sexual harassment in 2021-2022, out of
which 320,000 cases occurred in workplaces. Sexual misconduct in the workplace engrosses
actions that constitute nonconsensual sexual contact, sexual exploitation, sexual harassment and
nonconsensual sexual penetration. However, Australian workplaces have been unable to
eradicate the problem. Consequently, there are risks such as loss of productivity that emerge
because of endless time spent to solve these disputes, low work morale because of mental well-
being issues, absenteeism and staff turnover, especially when they cannot bear the memories of
their ordeal in the workplace. Moreover, companies are likely to lose their reputation when the
information lands in public spaces. These risks accelerate when the firm selects to do nothing
about the vice.
The incorporation of the sociological imagination concept proposed by C. Wright Mills
will be helpful in addressing sexual misconduct in the workplace. The philosophy intends to
reconcile individuals and society as part of social reality. The application of the theory will be
helpful in understanding power dynamics, resources and wealth access barriers, cultural norms
and stereotypes and limited social interventions that surround the contemporary problem. The
paper will also provide recommendations on the above factors identified by the sociological
imagination model. These solutions will align individual and societal realities in the context of
sexual misconduct in the workplace.
Strategy and Action: Limited Social Intervention
Mills’ sociological imagination model will be instrumental in the identification of limited
social interventions as the biggest problem that affects any social problem. Sexual harassment
has been suffering for years because of limited social interventions that fail to capture the ever-
changing faces of sexual misconduct in the workplace. However, to deal with the problem, I
propose the top-down approach and policy review as solutions to the problem.
The top-down approach engrosses leaders leading by example through the promotion of a
culture of respect and inclusion. The goal is to help followers emulate the actions of leaders in
upholding good conduct that is devoid of any sexual harassment of junior staff in the
organization. The actions will include asking leaders to act as role models by promoting
established policies and practices. The approach will allow followers to have role models who
will help them stick to company rules and regulations that deal with sexual harassment.
The following action is a policy review, where there are updates on policies and
procedures to reflect contemporary features of sexual misconduct in the workplace.
Incorporation of best practices and legal requirements ensures victims are aware of avenues
where they can voice their concerns. The action taken would be to implement a system to gather
feedback about the operations of existing policies. The input will be helpful in making necessary
changes that govern policy review.
