Viktor Orbán's Impact and Its Implication
s for Democracy
Over the past few years, political analysts have pointed out a distinct shift of the world's political map to
the right. Through Viktor Orbán, the
Prime Minister of Hungary, and the recent Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU). He has
vowed to "Make Europe Great Again," which signifies his illiberal, nationalist, and conservatively
oriented position. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary represents the global trend of reemerging
right-wing politics. The illiberal nationalist policies implemented by his government not only weaken the
democracy of Hungary but endanger democratic values, freedom of speech, and minorities' rights all
over the world, thus questioning the solid foundation and sustainability of democracy at this time.
Information about the person Viktor Orbán and information about the country Hungary
Viktor Orbán has been one of the significant political leaders in Hungary, occupying the position of
Prime Minister since May 2010 and from 1998 to 2002. His rule has brought the illiberal democracy
which is witnessed through his focus on nationalism and anti-Orange sentiment. Orbán's government
has continued with policies that have strengthened the executive, eroded the judiciary, and restricted
media freedoms. This change in perspective is known as a 'centralized illiberal state' where democratic
institutions get undermined for authoritarianism.
Some policies that Orbán has implemented include limiting refugee and immigration into Hungary
primarily based on sovereignty and security threats. His administration has also endeavored to change
the electoral laws in Hungary to his party's, Fidesz, advantage. This has led to reduced operation of the
opposition parties and the system of checks and balances. These actions have been criticised for
weakening of democracy and pulls the EU's standards of governance apart. Furthermore, Hungary has
become more nationalistic under Orbán. This is evident when it considers other European countries as
enemies and vice versa; this is a common situation in different parts of the world, particularly Europe
where nationalist politicians are rising.
Resurgence of Right-Wing Politics
Anger and cultural resentment does not only manifest Hungary, though there are clear right-wing
movements within the regions. In Europe, more right-wing political leaders include Marine Le Pen of
France and Giorgia Meloni of Italy; thus, nationalism and conservatism are rising. Le Pen's National Rally
and Meloni's Brothers of Italy have received increased support through
appealing to people's hatred for migrants and promising nationalist policies (In These Times, 2024).
These parties have pulled down the old order of politics and have recently been shaping most of the EU
polices.
In the United States, Donald Trump's presidency and the MAGA movement's triumph give a right-wing
revival. The particular agenda of Trump with populist opinions, prohibiting immigration, and accusing
the Democratic Party and other organizations of corruption has shown that right-wing politics is the
direction of the world (In These Times, 2024).
It is also apparent in other countries like Brazil where Jair Bolsonaro has been in a far-right presidency
uttering anti-leftism, and a quarrelsome stance towards the environmental and indigenous peoples'
causes (Human Rights Watch, 2017). Thus, it can be concluded that Bolsonaro's policies align with a
global trend of reemergence of the right-wing politics that goes against values of liberal democracy.
Orbán's Influence and Actions
For this reason, Viktor Orbán has been asserted to be a significant figure regarding the right wing
worldwide owing to his position as the President of the Council of the European Union. In this context,
Orbán's "Make Europe Great Again" indicates a larger campaign by
the political player to shift the EU to the right and/or nationalist agenda (The Conversation, 2024). This
kindly autocratic has entrenched policies that spew his illiberalism, including the oppression of the
press, judicial reform and anti-immigrant advocacy (Al Jazeera, 2024). Orbán has also tried to make
friendships with other authoritarian leaders elsewhere in Europe; this has helped the leader cement his
power and thus transformational in the European political setting.
Implications for Democracy
This course brings us on the right wing's return and its consequences for democratic culture and
structures. In my opinion, the most important one is the weakening of democracy, particularly the
checks and balances mechanisms. Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán has procured power to
himself, thus eradicating checks and balances a fundamental aspect of democracy. Orbán's government
in Hungary has gradually undermined the judiciary, limited the role of the opposition that controls only a
sixth of the parliament and the altered the electoral law in a way that plays to the advantage of the
ruling party. This concentration of power does not only the weaken the function of democracy, but also
the capacity of citizens to a
ffect
their leaders' actions. Such actions advocate mistreatment of the opponents in the same manner since
other democracies are not immune to the influence of a growing right wing.
The other core issue of concern is the freedom of the press is under threat. The right-wing governments
aim to establish dominance over the media to curb any form of rebellion and at the same convey a
predetermined message. Orbán's government was accused of weakening media independence in
Hungary by buying popular media and
putting loyalist managers in charge. This suppression dilutes the watchdog role as well as the speeches
of diversity, which are despotic elements of democracy. Not only does a controlled media make it
difficult for the people to get independant information, it also suppresses the freedom of speech and
critical analysis of the government's actions.
In addition, the surge in right politics results to instigation of marginalization of minorities and
worsening of policies regarding them. Especially immigrants and refugees have become a favorite topic
of Orbán, threats to national security and even culture are often cited. This exclusionary attitude creates
a climate of paranoia and exclusion thereby defeating the tenets of democracy that are anchored on
equality and human rights. The effect can also be felt on the minority rights, resulting in more social
cleavages and polarization, thus eradicating the society cohesiveness aspect which is central to more
democracy stability.
Conclusion
This plus Mr Viktor Orbány's role and policies demonstrate a new global paradigm shift – the revival of
right wing politics. It presents serious threats to the democratic procedures in government such as
diminishing of the democratic institutions, challenges to media freedom, and exclusive treatment of the
minorities. It is a question for an academic to specify the challenges and to strengthen democratic
values as right-wing policies are becoming more popular turning the future of democracy into a question
mark.
