After delving into "Sonny's Blues" by James Baldwin, I felt a strong emotional response
that made me think about the intertwined relationship between the narrator and Sonny. It was a
moving story of suffering, redemption, and music that spoke to me in a very personal way. The
first scene, when the narrator finds out that Sonny was arrested for possessing heroin, is also very
realistic because many families experience similar issues with drug addiction. It was quite easy
for me to relate to the narrator's shock and anger at first because such feelings are typical when a
family member faces such challenges. The introduction established a thrilling foundation for a
story that primarily touches on suffering and redemption.
As I got more into the details of the story, I was touched by the way Baldwin painted
Harlem as a lively and yet suffocating place. The descriptions of the streets of the neighborhood
and its inhabitants underline the feeling of hopelessness and being trapped that both Sonny and
