Musical Memoir: My Journey Through Music
Music has a very special place in my life as it has always been intertwined with my memories, feelings
and events. Ever since my childhood when my parents used to sing me to sleep at night or during my
rebellious teen’s years music was always with me. Those songs were like soothing words of affection in
those comforting arms while the rebellious sounds of my teenage years were for regaling my emerging
liberty. Every note and every lyric I have recorded personally engraved into my mind and my Faith; all
our milestones have been shaped by it. Music is not only a background, an addition or accessory to
everyday life; music is, in a way, a main character in my life.
Early Influences
The first associations are with the sound of the record player with my parents’ records. My father, the
music lover that he is, used to play rock standards – The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Their
songs and beats provided music in my home, which I could not help myself from appreciating.
Sometimes, staying in the living room and listening to the sharp melodies of the guitar, such as in Led
Zeppelin’s songs with Jimmy Page, or the conveyed deep emotions and feelings in John Lennon’s songs.
These moments was not just the first time when the person opens the door at the evening and turns on
the radio Some of them is the real first contact with the music as an art which is able to make people
feel and express their emotions and opinion.
While my father preferred country and western, and my father-in-law liked rock and roll music, my
mother was a strict classical music listener. The melodies which she was able to perform included
Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky and immediately the house was turned into a hall. As for the music, the
richness of ornaments and the great number of parts in the composition of the classical music attracted
me deeply. Piano struck me most as the keys opened up a world of the great and graceful display of
work. My mother cultivated this interest and before I knew it I was enrolled for piano lessons. These
were not only musical lessons but also the capacity necessary to construct music and understand what it
is to follow a strict workout regimen.
The Formative Years
I can remember when I was using play rocks to create musical instruments and humming my favorite
tunes as I got older my tastes in music changed. The anger and the drive of teenagers helped me find
punk and alternative rock. Green Day, Nirvana and The Offspring turned into my new heroes. Their
music had an edgy feel to it and the lyrics were so angry and upset– and I loved it as it gave views to
teen anger and confusion. I would seclude myself in my room listening to their albums on full volume,
and heard a taste of freedom in the rebellion of the music.
At this period, I also began to compose songs on my own. They were crude and B/W at first but they
were mine. Writing songs was a natural form of communication and a way to deal with what was going
on inside my head. In this aspect I felt comforted by the fact that art could be produced and something
new came from my head and heart.
Discovering New Genres
Going to high school also opened me to even more tunes. At school, I also signed up for the band where
I got to learn Jazz and Blues. The freedom of jazz and the application of multiple voices and intricate
rhythms which constituted the style really captivated me in a sense of the manner it caused me to look
at music. That’s when I felt the note of freedom, music is an instrument of freedom which allows you to
transform a melody you have heard into something that is entirely your own. Moreover, I started
listening to Jazz and found some new teachers in them like; Miles Davis and John Coltrane and albums
an open book of innovation and creativity.
Blues with its characteristic emotionality moved me in a different way When one feels the deep soul
that manifests in the blues guitar and, especially, in the voice of the performer, one understands that
this is the voice of the people. Learning from such musicians as B.B. King and Muddy Waters I
understood that music is an effective tool for the narration, which can depict the main moments of life
rather emotionally.
College Life and Beyond
My music life further changed in college. The cultural-diversity within the campus made me to
experience other genres that I never heard before. New found genres included world music, electronic,
hip-hop and some of the indie music came into my play lists. I went to concerts and became a part of
musical organizations and clubs and was more active, joining as many open-mic events as I could. Every
new genre that I was introduced opened up a new world and a new insight to the kind of music that was
out there.
One of the important changings that occurred during this period was the realization of the existence of
the electronic music. The intense rhythm and complex sound patterns used in contemporary dance floor
producers such as Daft Punk and Deadmau5 made me realise that electronic music can also produced
digitally. I began to work with music software making my own electronic music. This new avenue enable
me to mix up different styles and sounds much to my creativity’s delight.
Personal Style and Reflection
Watching my musical experience, it can be stated that all the periods of my life were signed with specific
musical preferences which contributed to my individuality. Given that rock and classical acceptable by
the age of 8, punk rebellion as a teenager as well as jazz, blues, and electronic styles when grown up,
every genre contributed to becoming a musician.
The music I listen to now is a blend of all these and my own. In many of my works I attempt to achieve
both utilitarian and existential goals to make a musical work that is solid and meaningful. It does not
matter if it is a melancholic piano composition, a fast rock song, or any type of eclectic electronics track,
the main objective is to speak to the listeners’ soul.
Conclusion
As for me, music is the most reliable companion that does not abandon one during both the best and
worst periods of life. It has provided me with voice; not having one when words left me; a safe haven;
when the world consumed me; and a way to connect with other people; who also love as much as I do.
Music remains a part of me even to this day and the journey does not end here; I have many more
melodious tunes to learn. As I proceed with my work, I am accompanied by the great tradition and the
passion for further development, thus wanting only to produce music that is genuine and sincere.
