ENGLISH 101 FINAL PORTFOLIO
Cover Letter
Dear Professor Salter,
I write this letter to acknowledge all of the growth I experienced as a writer this
semester and the challenges that came with that growth. Throughout the entirety of this
course, I have improved on some of my writing skills such as clear, concise writing,
showing and not telling, and use of repetitiveness. I had always tended to have
problems with those my entire academic writing career. With your writing projects and
various reading guides I feel as though I have improved my writing as a whole. I do feel
that one of my strengths is descriptive language and specificity. For example, in Writing
Project #1 I said, “By being challenged to read at this level I had the opportunity to read
literature classics earlier like; To Kill a Mockingbird, The Scarlet Letter, 1984, The Great
Gatsby, and so forth.” I feel like this did a good job with specificity for the narrative.
After completing this course I know that there are definitely goals I want to make
for my future as a writer. My first goal is to have more clear and concise writing.
Oftentimes my ideas won’t flow together thus making my essay harder to follow. For
instances in Writing Project #2, I had a harder time organizing my points. For instance,
in the second paragraph of my essay I said, ‘Many young women have encountered
sexual violence in their life. Doing research I have found that out of 81% of women that
have dealt with some form of sexual abuse.” While this is a a good sentence that
provides details on a relevant subject, this particular sentence belonged in the
2
introduction thus making my point redundant and harder to follow. Which leads me to
my next goal: lack of redundancy. I often struggle with this in my writing, for
instance,”However,
I don’t want to end the safety taught to young women because while it is good to teach
young women how to protect themselves and carry the appropriate safety tools, I just
believe this is equally important.” These sentences proved to be repetitive which made it
harder to bring my point through to the audience.
I know that points I’ve learned this semester will help me in both an academic
and professional platform. Many people may say that skills we’ve learned in this class
can only be applied to other English or literature classes, but that is far from true. As a
biology major, I have many classes that come with labs and thus I have many lab
reports I have to write that will require good writing so that others can follow my points.
My lab reports require that I have coherency so that the readers can move from one
major point to the next without confusion and every kind of writing requires a good
