A Short Reflection
Throughout the recent years of my writing I believe my preparations and initiatives to
take action in composing a paper have definitely changed. Whether it be my ability to scour
through multiple articles with hopes of dissecting evidence to help better my argument, or to do
something as little as advancing my diction, my writing has come a long way in progression. In
this piece, I would like to reflect on my progression as a writer in this class specifically. Dive
into the depths of how this class helped me become more adept and proficient. I would like to
analyze my writing through all three projects and specify what exactly I’ve done as a writer to
improve my skill set.
Throughout my first essay titled, “What Makes A Man” I recall a childhood memory and
present how this event changed me as a person. This project required no sources and is mainly
focused on telling a story rather than an argumentative viewpoint. I believe I was able to
organize this essay to fit the story and have it read easily by my audience. The paper lacks tone
in some areas and I did not bother to include a proper MLA style header. Throughout the writing
I use dialogue to help tell my story and find myself struggling in areas that feel more forced to be
spread out and focused longer than they should be. Because of these little errors I believe they
add up and eventually hurt my essays flow. Things start to sound less smooth and more choppy
and as I reread parts like, As my hand began to wind back I began to take sight off of my target
and gaze upward. As I began to do this my hand had already gone forward and released my
Campise 2
squeeze of the rock.” Parts like this in my writing gave off a repetitive feeling and a lack of word
placement. I felt my writing was stale at times and could have used better diction or at least a
shift in tone throughout this project.
As I received plenty of feedback from my professor after the first piece of writing, I was
able to use this and help build off of my second assignment. Project two starts off an analysis of
the movie Rocky and why I came to believe it made the perfect underdog story. Now, at times I
felt that my writing came off as more a movie promotion rather than an analysis because of
statements like, “Looking for an action movie? Something realistic? Looking for a movie with a
story so powerful it could motivate you to get up on your feet? The story of Rocky Balboa tells a
tale of a thirty-something man who wanders the streets of Philadelphia with no general purpose-a
man who humbly helps those in need but can’t seem to help himself.” Areas that definitely could
have used improvement would be my introduction and my last body paragraph. I’m a big
believer in starting off strong so for me to not excel in my intro kind of bummed me out. I think I
definitely had jumps in tone and was able to organize a well crafted review. In the end I think
this project really shows off my skillset when it comes to analysis. This analysis also showed off
just how much background research I was able to do in order to make an efficient review.
Finally we come to my most recent piece of work. In my final project of three, I employ
two articles with opposing viewpoints on the matter of whether uniforms should be mandatory
for students. This paper nonetheless was interesting because it’s an approach I felt unfamiliar
with. Now, in the past I have reviewed articles and I have made strong arguments within my
writing, but this paper would have me the writer, not only take a side on the subject but also
produce two articles and argue which is stronger. Though this assignment felt foreign to me, I
Campise 3
looked forward to writing it. This project was an opportunity to expand my skills as a writer. And
of course it wasn’t going to be anything special, the point was I was able to start somewhere. I
felt I had come a long way with my formatting being in good shape and my body paragraphs
maintaining structure throughout the lengths of my writing. I think I fulfill the requirements
when it comes to defining a good report. I reread my work and highlight statements such as, “I
think seeing an image rather than living it can be completely different and that is what uniforms
act as. They paint a picture of a clean school that keeps their students in check, they show your
child being kept dressed as they want them to be and this to parents is what seems best.” and in
sections where I use my sources such as, “One parent, Geanine Cilenti defends the idea with a
reasoning of less back to school-shopping hassle and less clothes to buy and ends up saying, "We
buy other clothes throughout the year, but those things are like, okay, whatever." (Bhattarai)
Completely contradicting the idea of not having to buy more clothes.” I felt I was able to meet
the expectations of properly citing evidence. To follow this my reasoning was well organized and
was able to follow up and through with how I presented my evidence.
To conclude this reflection, I’ve often used my previous works to help better myself in
future projects. I look back on things in order to move forward wiser and smarter. This strategy
has worked for me and this paper merely analyzes a small piece of my life's work in school. I
believe as a growing adolescent and in the peak years of being a teenager, my progression has
jumped bigger than ever and things in the world just start to make more sense. I think each of
these projects represent different areas and how I am able to perform in them while also showing
how the last project was able to improve my next. This serves a point, though we make mistakes
Campise 4
and may not be perfect, if it were not for the mistakes we would never be able to strive for being
perfect.
