Academic appeal letter
Dear Members of the Committee,
I am writing this letter to appeal the decision previously made that i discontinue my
studies at the College. From the gravity of my poor academic performance, i acknowledge and
take full responsibility for not meeting the program's standards. My academic journey since the
second year of my studies has been fraught with personal challenges that significantly impacted
my ability to perform well. I am committed to making the necessary changes to ensure future
success.. However, I am committed to overcoming these obstacles and demonstrating my
capacity to succeed if granted a second chance and granted a chance to share what and how my
situation has been since i joined the institution, which has been both a humbling and enlightening
experience. I am determined to demonstrate my capability and dedication to the nursing
program.
Since i joined the institution, my academic journey started with enthusiasm and high
hopes in my first year of studies. I was performing well in my classes and keeping up with the
demands of the program until midway through the semester, when I encountered several
setbacks. These included an unfortunate incident with a term paper that resulted in a significant
drop in my grade and a subsequent loss of motivation. I was also accused of academic
misconduct, which led to a hearing and further impacted my mental state and academic
performance. I, therefore, fully acknowledge my failure to achieve the required academic
standards and understand that maintaining a consistent and satisfactory academic performance is
essential, and I regret not meeting these expectations. I should have sought assistance earlier and
managed my time and responsibilities more effectively from which) I take full responsibility for
my shortcomings and am committed to making the necessary changes to ensure my future
success.
Comprehensively, i would like to explain the situations in depth that )Affected and that
may still be affecting my academic performance. During the past, or rather the first academic
year, I faced several personal challenges that significantly impacted my performance. In
December 2023, I lost my father, who had always been my mentor, and played a crucial role in
managing my health condition, sickle cell anaemia. The loss deeply affected me emotionally and
disrupted my focus on academics since he was not only a guide but also a source of emotional
support and stability. His passing left a void that I struggled to fill for quite a long time, being
that i also have no other close guardian. My grief manifested in a lack of motivation and
concentration on academic matters since I have been straggling to gain myself. That being
interest, self-esteem and courage to handle or tackle academics i used to do before he went away.
My loss has not only affected my academic journey but also the financial flow in our family
which has made me not to adhere well to the fee payments, which can be seen from my frequent
late and subsequent payments.
Adding to my emotional turmoil, my Aunt, a single parent, is the only person who assists
me still maintaining my academic journey. And unfortunately also has been struggling with
mental health issues that required frequent attention and care, which often conflicted with my
study schedule. The situation of my father's loss and my Aunt's mental issues have placed a
significant burden on me and my younger brother, as we had to take on more responsibilities to
support our family. Balancing these responsibilities with my academic commitments proved to
be overwhelming, and hence, as a result, I was unable to dedicate the necessary time and focus to
my studies adequately.
Despite these challenges, I am now gradually getting in a better position emotionally and
financially to focus on my academic goals after getting a part-time hustle from one of my close
family friends. I have also sought counselling to help me cope with my grief and emotional
stress, which has been a transformative experience, allowing me to process my emotions
healthily and productively. Additionally, my family and close friends, through small donations,
have secured additional support for my aunt's mental concern, which has also alleviated some of
the pressures on me and allowed me to concentrate more fully on my education. From all these
experiences, I can surely acknowledge that I have also learned valuable lessons about resilience
and the importance of seeking help when needed, as i did by getting an emotional and health
therapist who has always guided me in the journey of recovery. I also realized that my reluctance
to ask for help and my tendency to internalize my struggles were significant barriers to my
success. Therefore, moving forward, I am committed to being more proactive in seeking support
and utilizing available resources.
Being that I am gaining confidence and courage to handle my academics before receiving
the notice of being discontinued, i have made strategic plans to ensure that i get back on track if
given a chance. My plans include specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound
(SMART) goals to track my progress and keep me focused on ensuring that I meet and exceed
the program's requirements if given the opportunity to continue my studies. I will attend weekly
tutoring sessions and participate actively in study groups, having identified key areas where I
need improvement, and that includes working closely with tutors who will help me address my
major academic gaps. When it comes to time management, I have developed a comprehensive
study schedule that balances academic work, personal care, and rest to help me catch up with
what i lost and catch up with others effectively, including dedicated study hours, regular breaks,
and time for extracurricular activities to ensure a well-rounded routine. Additionally, by reducing
my work hours from the hustle I just got, I will have more time to focus on my studies and make
little savings to boost my fee payments.
Other strategies include moving into a single apartment, which has provided me with a
quiet and stable environment conducive to studying. I have set up a dedicated study area free
from distractions and equipped with all necessary study materials. From my therapist's advice, I
realized that my emotional development is also key to achieving better grades and hebce)to
maintain my well-being, I will continue attending counseling sessions and have incorporated
regular exercise and mindfulness practices into my routine to manage stress effectively and that
also invloves attending regular meetings with academic advisors will also help me stay on track
and address any emerging challenges promptly, seeking their guidance to refine my study
strategies and ensure continuous improvement.
