Covid-19 and the Earth
The COVID-19 outbreak has caused the greatest disruption in human life and has had
consequences for the environment in all regions of Earth. Due to strict measures of quarantine,
the amplification of seismic noise, which seismometers could capture, for example, the one
located at Paula Koelemeijer’s flat in London, significantly declined ("Four Ways the
Coronavirus Is Changing the Planet - the Atlantic"). These reductions in externally induced
vibrations helped scientists to identify natural events such as earthquakes. Moreover, the use of
cars and industries decreased, so the air quality improved significantly in the polluted areas,
though only in the short term. Communities were awarded a significant decrease in noise barriers
that enabled them to hear things like birds chirping. Even the seas were calmer, which eased the
pressure on marine life, which was already particularly sensitive to the sounds created by ships.
While these changes are temporary, they demonstrates how drastically human activity affects the
environment and offers a brief look into a less polluted Earth.
