Catalog Description: Concepts of problem solving using Java, algorithm design,
structured programming, fundamental algorithms and techniques, and computer
systems concepts, social and ethical responsibility.
Lecture & Lab: This course is an introductory course to programming using Java
language. The course requires no previous background in programming, but does
require considerable dedication and hard work. The course concentrates on
programming concepts, problem solving, and basic program design. The course
consists of an interactive textbook that includes readings, videos, activities, challenges,
and assignments, and lab activity.
Required Textbook: CSE 110 Principles of Programming with Java zyBook. This is an
interactive electronic textbook (no physical copy required). This textbook is required for
the course, and you cannot complete the assignments without it. You can purchase an
access key from the ASU Bookstore or purchase your textbook within your Canvas
course in the Let's Get Started module.
Extra material and supplemental material may be made available through Canvas and
through other course resources like Inscribe.
Computer Requirements: This is a fully online course; therefore, it requires a computer
with internet access and the following technologies:

●Adobe Acrobat ReaderLinks to an external site. (free)
●Webcam, microphone, headset/earbuds, and speaker
●Microsoft Office (Microsoft 365 is freeLinks to an external site. for all
currently-enrolled ASU students)
●Reliable broadband internet connection (DSL or cable) to stream videos.

Prerequisites: No courses. Basic computer literacy is useful.
Online Expectations: CSE 110 is far more rigorous and challenging than other 100-level
courses. If you are taking this course as a 15-week course, you should plan to spend at
least 10 hours per week working on the various activities in this course. It is highly
recommended that you should schedule your 10 hour per week as follows:
●5 hr/wk – Content (reading, videos, activities)
●1 hr/wk – Lab Activities
