With millions of passengers and tons of cargo moving through airports daily, ensuring the safety
and integrity of air travel is essential for maintaining public trust, economic stability, and
national security. This introduction will explore the multifaceted nature of aviation security,
examining the emerging threats faced by the industry, the layers of security implemented to
mitigate these risks, the effectiveness of current mitigation strategies, and recommendations for
further improvement.
Emerging security threats in the aviation industry
One emerging security threat in the aviation industry is the potential use of uncrewed
aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, for malicious purposes near airports. With the increasing
accessibility and affordability of drone technology, individuals or groups are employing a
heightened risk of drones to disrupt airport operations, endanger aircraft, or conduct
unauthorized surveillance. This threat is particularly concerning due to drones' ability to bypass
traditional security measures and access restricted airspace, posing significant global challenges

Effectiveness of mitigation strategies

drones. Physical barriers, such as perimeter fencing and netting, can deter unauthorized drone
entry into sensitive airport areas. Detection systems using radar, RF scanning, or acoustic sensors
can identify and track drones in real time, allowing for timely intervention. Interdiction
measures, including deploying counter-drone technology or trained birds of prey, can neutralize
unauthorized drones and prevent potential threats. Additionally, regulatory frameworks
governing the operation of drones near airports can enforce restricted airspace zones and deter
malicious activities. Public awareness campaigns and education initiatives can also be crucial in
informing the public about the risks of flying drones near airports and encouraging compliance
with regulations.
