CON 252: Methods, Materials, and Equipment Spring 2020
HO: Wednesday, March 25, 2020
Homework #5 DUE: Tuesday, April 7, 2020 at 12:00 PM
Name: Marley Masseur
Directions for Completion and Submission:
All homework assignments are to be typed on a word processor and submitted electronically via
Canvas no later than 12:00 PM on Tuesday, April 7, 2020. Be sure to show all work and to highlight
your answers. You are to complete this assignment individually. This homework is based on lectures,
class discussions, course readings, and may require additional independent research.
Hint: Mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems are covered in Ch. 16-18 of Olin’s book (posted on
Canvas).
Part I: Mechanical Systems
There are 7 major types of mechanical systems used in construction. These are listed below:
Forced-Air Delivery Systems (an All-Air HVAC System)
Air Plenum Systems (an All-Air HVAC System)
Hot Water Systems (an All-Water HVAC System)
Hot and Chilled Water Systems (an All-Water HVAC System)
Steam Systems
Air-Water Systems
Direct Refrigerant Systems
1. Bearing these systems in mind, create a table that addresses the following questions:
a. Describe each of the HVAC systems in at most, three sentences. (5 points each)
b. List an application of each system (e.g., residential construction, commercial
construction). (2 points each)
System Description Application
Forced-air Pushes air through a duct. residential
Air Plenum Inbetween the structural ceiling and a dropdown
ceiling
commericial
Hot Water System Water heating throughout the building. industrail
Hot and Chilled Water
system
Passed through a coil. industrial
Steam Systems Heats up water and sends it through radiators and
heat up the rooms
Industrial and
residential
Air-Water Systems Water vapor is taken from the air to make water
potable

Direct Refrigerant
Systems
Commercial and
residential
2. Which type of system (air or water) is most common in commercial construction? (1 point) Air
Plenum
3. Briefly describe how natural ventilation ensures that cool air reaches occupants (1-2 sentences).
(5 points) when snow or winter hits and the windows and vents let in cool air.

Part II: Electrical Systems
4. What is the difference between power and energy? (5 points) Energy is the amount of work
that can be performed by force and power is defined as the rate at ehich work is
performed.
5. You enter a home and find the service entrance is in the basement. Does this make sense? Why
or why not? (5 points) no because you will most likely have to lay down to do work in a
crawl space.
6. What is the best practice in laying out electrical circuits in residential or commercial buildings?
(5 points) commercial because it easier and more open.
Part III: Plumbing
7. Why do we try to align as many rooms as possible along the same pipe in either the vertical or
horizontal direction? (10 points) Chase walls is to make the service side much more simple
to make it easier and everything piped on one wall labor cost is reduced.
8. List and describe in two sentences, three (3) sustainable or green water related features in a
building (10 points) Discuss the impact of one of these systems on the piping system in the
building. (5 points) waterless urinals, touchless metered lavatory faucets, and dual flush
toilets and with the toilets which given option to use half as much water.
9. Why do designers pay more attention to low flow water fixtures now than they did in the
1940’s? (5 points) per code due to AZ being a water conservation state.
