1. What is the difference between iron and steel? What is the difference between
wrought iron and cast iron?
Ans: Cast Iron is about 2% to 4% carbon and is quite brittle but is strong in
compression. Wrought Iron has little to no carbon and is strong in tension. Iron is
an element straight from the earth, and steel combines iron and carbon.
3. How are steel structural shapes produced? How are the weights and
thicknesses of a shape changed?
Ans: Structural shapes are made in a rolling mill, they change shape and
thickness by passing through a series of rollers and depending on what the
specifications of said shape, determine what rollers they pass through.
5.Explain the designation W21 × 68.
Ans: Wide flange shape, 21 inches deep, and 68 pounds per lineal foot
6. How can you tell a shear connection from a moment connection? What is the
role of each?
Ans: A shear connection stops the connection from moving in every way and
resists being taken apart while a moment connection can move but only if
another moves with it.
