Participant observation is one of the significant methods in the sociological research since
it allows the researchers to observe the performing social activity and the participants they
investigate. Such an approach facilitates gathering comprehensive data concerning activities,
standard practices and interactions in different social contexts. For this instance, attention is paid
to the family dinner meal taken outside the home at a restaurant. In this context, we want to focus
on various aspects of social interactions during this event regarding people's communication
patterns, preferences for seating arrangements, and other similar concerns; furthermore, we want
to come up with explanations for the behaviours that seem abnormal and explore the variety of
factors that contribute to the complicated nature of family relationships.
Method
The observation was on a Friday evening in a small, mid-sized family restaurant. The
members of my household that I will focus on are my father, mother, elder brother and myself.
As a method of observation, participant observation, the researcher gets actively involved in the
event while at the same time having a mental note of the events and how the different people in
event are interacting. This setting was general enough to give me an account of typical families'
social interactions while enabling me to view the peculiarities of their communication in a
familiar and nonintrusive way.
Observations
Common Social Interactions
Greetings and Seating Arrangements: When they arrived, people embraced and shook
hands, reaffirming the maintenance of family ties and friendly interaction. Regarding the seating
structure, there was a view of a typical family where parents sat at the head, obviously due to
their central role in the family. On this account, boys and girls were on opposite benches, which
3
is typical of the studied country and reflects both the hierarchical organization of relations in the
family and their relation to one another (Deutsch, 2022). In this pattern of greeting and seating,
censors with the societal expectations of the family in as much as respect and the accepted roles
in the family set-up (Chapter 14: Relationship, Marriage, and Family).
Conversation Patterns: The conversation was realistic and unforced: parents took the
initiative to discuss family-related topics and topics related to recent events. Siblings also began
with their stories or statements, and parents interjected calls to try to bring the children back to
central issues. Some of the social norms which were displayed included taking turns in speaking
and interrupting each other rarely that is, if at all; this is in contrast with proper etiquette
displayed in a regular family (Society and Social Interaction).
Non-Verbal Cues and Body Language: Body language had a lot of effect throughout
dinner time. Small gestures such as nodding and smiling and, at times, hand gestures were used
to support the consensus and important stamping points. There was clinging and touching, there
was follow gaze, that is, sustaining, regard, and focus was also so often given toward the objects
of discussion (Chapter 3: Culture).
Outlier Behaviors
Deviations from Norms: If I focus on one eccentricity that became noticeable during the
dinner, it has to be the silence of my younger sibling. Usually engaged in conversation with the
family members and expressive during the dinner, everybody got worried that she did not say a
word during the whole meal. Any deviation from this was quite conspicuous, especially given the
energetic nature of the family, especially the children (Mohan, 2022). The actions of the family,
namely the attempts to address them and talk to them repeatedly, demonstrated the breach of
4
social interaction and caused the initiation of discussion about the reasons behind the changes,
whether it is personal problems or pressure from outside.
Conflict and Resolution: A minor intergroup conflict arose in a political issue when my
father and older siblings had different opinions. Though the voices were a little raised, an
amicable resolution was via dialogue and understanding, and there was no conflict (Deutsch,
2022). This process of conflict solution revealed one more strength of the family, namely, their
ability to sort things out amicably. It highlighted proper socialization practices that included
communication, respect in the process of solving conflicts that may be evident within the family
and other social interchange of a family; this is because the beliefs that are through socialization
are reflective of the values to be embraced by the society (Chapter 5: Socialization).
Analysis
Examining the matter systematically, we might identify the following observations; These
observations explanation can be with the help of Sociological concepts. Applying role theory
allows one to understand the more specific behaviors of the dinner participants in terms of roles
within a family. Thus, parents embraced the position of leaders and initiators of conversations
and decisions and children as submitters (Chapter 4: Society and Social Interaction). These roles
are stereotypical concerning the family Bowen structure and show us that there is order in
establishing positions that are fit for performance in set sociometry.
About the issues of social norms, they were reflected in the observed behavior. The
participants' role when demonstrating admirable communication patterns and managing conflicts
was consistent with the norms expected of a family (Chapter 1: An Introduction to Sociology).
The characters showed proper speech, attentive listening, and manners, as expected from people
within a family. Activities that deviate from the norm, like the quietness of the family's younger
5
sibling, need regular checks. Such deviations may result from personal misunderstandings,
stress, or any other circumstance that may trigger undesirable conduct. These peculiarities reveal
social interactions' multifaceted nature and the importance of paying attention to the
contemporary individual context while conducting sociological research (Mohan, 2022).
Conclusion
The observation of the family dinner showed the typical patterns of social relations and
behaviour and possible deviations within this specific context of a family gathering. A significant
emphasis is placed on the roles of individuals and the norms of behaviour in various situations
that were important for the studied culture. Although it is one event, the researcher was able to
capture the dynamics of the family that may be of interest to more general sociological
investigations on behaviours of families and socialization. Similarly, future observations could
be made in places other than the one under study to get a broader perspective of social behaviour.
The sample could be diverse, with families having different structural makeups.
