Week 2 Written Assignment: Understanding Diversity
1. Explain the difference between valuing and managing diversity and provide examples
from professional experiences for each. Your examples should be novel (do not use what is
written in the book). Show how communication affects this process.
Valuing diversity means recognizing and appreciating the unique qualities and
perspectives each individual brings to the table. For instance, in a marketing team, valuing
diversity might involve actively seeking ideas from team members with different cultural
backgrounds to create a campaign that resonates with a broader audience (Ely & Thomas, 2020).
Managing diversity, on the other hand, involves implementing strategies and practices to ensure
that this diversity is effectively utilized. This could include diversity training programs,
mentorship schemes, and policies that promote inclusion. Effective communication is key in both
valuing and managing diversity, as it ensures that all voices are heard and respected, fostering a
collaborative and innovative environment.
2. Using a variety of concepts that were introduced in your chapter, identify, define, and
explain the one or two areas regarding understanding or managing diversity in which you
are the strongest. Show how communication affects this process through specific examples.
One area where I excel in understanding diversity is in recognizing and mitigating
unconscious biases. This involves being aware of my own preconceptions and actively working
to challenge them. For example, during team meetings, I make a conscious effort to give equal
speaking opportunities to all members (Caputo et al., 2019), ensuring that quieter individuals are
also heard. Communication plays a crucial role here, as it involves active listening and creating a
2
safe space for open dialogue. By doing so, I help foster an inclusive environment where diverse
perspectives are valued and integrated into decision-making processes.
3. Using a variety of concepts that were introduced in your chapter, identify, define, and
explain the one or two areas of understanding or managing diversity in which you need
more improvement. Examine specific communication opportunities that could help you
improve your intercultural communication competence.
One area I need to improve in is understanding cultural communication styles. Different
cultures have different ways of expressing themselves, and sometimes direct communication can
be perceived as rude or aggressive. To improve in this area, I could benefit from training
programs that focus on intercultural communication and by seeking feedback from colleagues
from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, practicing active listening and being mindful of non-
verbal cues can help bridge communication gaps. Enhancing these skills will allow me to
communicate more effectively and build stronger relationships in a multicultural workplace.
4. If you did not change or improve your intercultural communication competence, discuss
how it would affect your personal and professional life. Use specific experiences/examples
to show the implications.
Failing to improve my intercultural communication competence could lead to
misunderstandings and conflicts in both personal and professional settings (Jackson, 2019). For
example, during a project with international partners, misinterpreting cultural norms and
communication styles could result in misaligned expectations and project delays. In my personal
life, it could create barriers in relationships with friends or family members from different
3
cultural backgrounds. Improving these skills is essential for fostering mutual respect, trust, and
effective collaboration, ultimately contributing to personal growth and professional success.
5. Identify, define and explain one barrier to accepting diversity discussed in your textbook
that you experienced/observed and discuss how you would address it.
One barrier to accepting diversity is ethnocentrism, the belief that one’s own culture is
superior to others. I observed this in a previous workplace where some team members were
dismissive of ideas from colleagues with different cultural backgrounds. To address this, I would
promote cultural awareness through workshops and team-building activities that highlight the
value of diverse perspectives. Encouraging open dialogue and providing platforms for sharing
cultural experiences can help reduce ethnocentrism and foster a more inclusive environment.
6. Select one of the five dimensions of cross-cultural differences discussed in your textbook.
Explain the meaning and offer a specific example to show how it impacts cross-cultural
communication (from your own experiences, or from what you learned through your
research).
One of the five dimensions of cross-cultural differences is individualism versus
collectivism. Individualistic cultures prioritize personal goals and individual achievements, while
collectivist cultures emphasize group goals and collective well-being. In a multicultural team,
understanding this dimension is crucial for effective communication. For example, during a team
project, an individual from a collectivist culture might prioritize group consensus, while someone
from an individualistic culture might focus on personal contributions. Recognizing these
differences can help in tailoring communication approaches to ensure that all team members feel
valued and understood.

7. Name individual diversity strategies discussed in your chapter. Select one and explain
how you might apply it moving forward to help gain awareness and improve your ability to
understand and relate to others.
One diversity strategy is engaging in continuous cultural competence training. This
involves regularly participating in workshops and training sessions that focus on different
cultural norms, values, and communication styles. Moving forward, I plan to actively seek out
such opportunities and apply the knowledge gained to my interactions with colleagues from
diverse backgrounds. This strategy will help me become more aware of my own biases, improve
my intercultural communication skills, and foster a more inclusive and respectful work
environment.
8. Think back on the questions and identify a few that were more difficult to complete than
others. Explain why.
The questions that required reflection on my own weaknesses in understanding or
managing diversity were more challenging. It is often difficult to critically assess one’s own
limitations and vulnerabilities. Additionally, providing specific examples from personal
experiences can be challenging as it requires a deep level of introspection and honesty. However,
these questions are crucial for personal growth and development, as they highlight areas for
improvement and provide opportunities for learning.
9. What did you learn about yourself in this exercise?
Through this exercise, I learned that I have a strong foundation in recognizing and
valuing diversity, but there is always room for improvement, particularly in understanding
cultural communication styles. I realized the importance of continuous learning and self-
5
awareness in fostering an inclusive environment. This exercise also highlighted the significant
role of effective communication in managing diversity, and I am committed to improving my
intercultural communication competence to enhance both my personal and professional
relationships.
