How many and which personal details do you think people should expose on their social
networking pages? Is there any information that you think should be routinely disclosed? Never
disclosed? How much do you disclose? Why?
I do not think that people should be regulated on how much of their personal information they
share on their social network system. At the end of the day you are responsible for the
information you share. I follow a very minimalist approach with my social media accounts. The
less strangers can know about me the better. With every SNS there are bound to be lurkers
with malicious intent. If minors and young adults are educated on the dangers of online
predators at an early age, I believe the risk of younger users sharing too much information could
be reduced. The more private you make your account the less likely you are to encounter spam
as well. Knowing this information it is healthy to keep the SNS aware of its responsibility to
maintain integrity when it comes to handling people’s information. As a user it is your
responsibility to know the terms and conditions of the SNS when it comes to them sharing your
information. When answering the question of what should and shouldn’t be routinely disclosed it
is important to note the purpose of the site. For example, if you are using a dating website it
would be appropriate to share your age and gender. That being said the less you share the
better! Maybe try meeting someone and a coffee shop instead…

There are three personal details people should let their friends and family know on
their SOCIAL MEDIA accounts. Some of those are their name, gender, and a picture of
themselves so that people know it’s truly them and not someone who’s CATFISHING. I
personally disclose my name, a profile picture of myself, and that I’m a female employee. I do
this because I want my family and friends to know that it’s really me. I also let people know that
I’m a female employee rather than giving them my company’s name because it’s my personal
preference. There are a few things I think shouldn’t be disclosed and more like concealed. For
example, apps like Facebook and Instagram where you can add your mobile number or even
your email address should not be disclosed because of how personal that information is. Also,
people use this app called Snapchat where you can use “Snap Maps” to share your location
with others. This should not be disclosed because it’s too confidential and it would not be a
pleasant situation if it got in the wrong hands. Overall, I believe disclosing certain information
such as your gender, what you call yourself, and an image is a good thing to share especially
around friends and family.

Alysia,
Thanks for sharing about what you think should be disclosed on social media accounts.
The three personal detail you think is okay to share on social media is safe and in my opinion a
good call for a standard. Something I would like to point out though is that the majority of people
share much more of their personal information than you do. For example, I can reliably go
through my friend’s Facebook accounts and see their date of birth. Someone’s date of birth is
actually very sensitive and this information in the wrong hands could definitely result in a
security breach. I think that if users wish to share any more information outside of the three
details you highlighted they need to be very familiar with the terms and conditions of their social
