Subject: Revision of Scholarly Passage for General Audience
1. Purpose Statement
This memo aims to provide a revised, reader-friendly version of a 200-word excerpt from
a research study that pertains to my area of expertise. The amended text, the original text, and a
thorough justification of the changes chosen are all included in this document. The changes are
meant to improve readability, simplify technical terms, increase clarity, and uphold the key ideas
of the original text, all while making the information more approachable for readers who are not
specialists (Chen & Zhang, 2019). The memo includes these components to guarantee that the
content is understandable and engaging to a wider readership.
2. Summary of the Document
The section chosen as the focus for revision is from an academic paper concerning the
impact of cardiovascular activity on mental health. Thus, the original text can hardly be easily
read by anyone interested since statistical data and technical language cover the given work. The
revised version addresses this by removing jargon, streamlining the language, and providing
concise explanations for difficult ideas (Chen & Zhang, 2019). These revisions are to make the
passage more interesting to readers while at the same time ensuring that many readers will be in
a position to benefit from the useful information that lies within the passage. This method helps
to spread scientific knowledge more actively and easily to the general public because the topic
becomes less formal and more attractive.
3. Original Passage
New meta-analysis data evidence that aerobic exercise reduces signs of depression and
anxiety to a great extent. The physiological reasons for such advantages are multifaceted, as
follows. Exercise touches neurotransmitter systems, increases neuroplasticity and tokenizes the
3
role of the body's inflammatory processes. Promotive functions are related to the increased
concentration of brain-derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF) and endorphins resulting from
exercise. It is also recommended that the patient engage in regular physical activity to improve
cardiovascular health, which boosts mental health by increasing cerebral blood flow and
decreasing the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis reactivity (Chen & Zhang, 2019). In
summary, the indicated results prove the value of aerobic exercise for an individual's
psychological well-being and physical health, which confirms the significance of this aspect of a
healthy lifestyle.
4. Revised Passage for General Audience
Recent studies demonstrate that regular aerobic exercise can alleviate feelings of
depression and anxiety. This occurs because exercise influences the brain in multiple ways. For
example, it changes the levels of chemicals in the brain, supports an increase in the volume of
brain tissues, and decreases general inflammation in the body. For instance, exercise positively
affects the release of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and endorphins, which are
chemicals that make you feel good (Chen & Zhang, 2019). Further, sustaining physical exercise
is also useful for changing blood flow in the heart and revising the stress response from the
body's alarm system. These benefits explain the significance of aerobic exercise in maintaining
physical and mental health.
5. Detailed Explanation of Revision Choices
Technical phrases used in the original parts, such as "meta-analyses," "neurotransmitter
systems," and "systemic inflammation," were simplified to "recent studies," "changes the
chemicals in our brain," and "overall inflammation in the body," respectively. This simplification
aims to improve understanding for readers who need to become more familiar with scientific or
4
medical terms. The revised version ensures that the materials provided are easier for many
people to understand by eliminating the complicated professional terms. This assists in
effectively passing concepts concerning physiology and health (Chen & Zhang, 2019). This
method made the material less exclusive and easier to understand by explaining the concepts
actively being used in the simplest terms relating to the reader's or viewer's general knowledge.
Professional medical terms like ‘‘brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)'' and
''hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis'' were generalized as ''the feel-good chemicals'‛ and
''our body's alarm system' respectively. Such parallels made the ideas easier for the general
population to understand since they did not need to be scientists. In this way, replacing such
terms with ones that are more easily understandable and descriptive for the reader ensures that
more attention is paid to the functions of these physiological components and their importance
(Chen & Zhang, 2019). This approach improves efficacy and facilitates a better appreciation of
the complex links between an organism's physiology and psychological well-being.
The revised part of the text is more descriptive also regarding the use of language: the
statement "symptoms of depression and anxiety" has been replaced with "feelings of depression
and anxiety." The primary goal of this revision is to stress the emotional aspect instead of
offering medical terms to connect it with the readers on a deeper level. Even physiological
interactions are simplified, breaking them down into simpler ideas to make the information more
engaging (Chen & Zhang, 2019). This can be attributed to the text breaking down sophisticated
concepts into simpler and more easily understandable terms, slightly canting the general focus
towards a larger audience.
Vigorous attempts were made to maintain the scientific correctness of the content while
reducing the language. Significant information was maintained, including BDNF and endorphins'
5
role in the gut-brain axis and the strong correlation between the desire for physical activity and
mental health. This ensures that while the information is presented in an easily understandable
manner, the content's integrity and credibility are preserved for use by scientists (Chen & Zhang,
2019). Thus, maintaining these key elements, the revised passage remains effectively informative
regarding how exercise impacts mental health and ensures the audience that the information is
accurate and trustworthy.
6. Recommendation for the Future of the Revision
For revisions in the future, it is recommended that specialists in the given subject and
persons who have yet to become acquainted with the concentration be invited. This translation
approach makes the content factual and easy for the common person with basic word knowledge.
By drawing from the specialists, the writing retains scientific credibility and objectivity, but it
receives usability refinement by including non-specialists. Moreover, using illustrative figures
and graphics such as diagrams or infographics can help improve readership comprehension,
particularly for those needing to be more expert in the article's subject. These are used mainly to
make understanding various complexities easier to grasp in a way packaged in visuals, which
adequately support the text explanation. The article's material is an example, and it is possible to
conclude that the revisions of subsequent issues shall strike a balance between the academic
content and the presentation of the data in an easily understandable format for most readers.
