Key Elements of High-Performance Teams
Groups are integral to any organization and contribute to its development in innovation
and efficiency. Understanding the different types of work teams and the means for increasing
their effectiveness is paramount for leaders who seek to achieve the potential excellence of
teamwork and effectiveness.
Common Types of Work Teams
A functional$structure consists of people from one department responsible for
implementing specific tasks concerning their specialization. Chapter 8 by Helm-Stevens et al.
(2023) discusses four common types of work teams: natural teams, functional teams, cross-
functional teams, self-managed teams, and virtual teams. The concept of cross-functional teams
highlights the presence of employees from different units working on one task. Cross-functional
teams are self-managed and thus fully responsible for their work. Virtual teams are distributed
teams that carry out activities from different locations and use technology to support work
activities.
Developing high-Performance Teams
Leaders can develop high-performance teams through five key methods: ensuring
everyone knows what they want to achieve, cultivating transparent communication,
strengthening trust, promoting teamwork, and offering constant professional development.
Defining specific objectives helps the employees recognize the task's vision and position (Helm-
Stevens, 2023). Open and informal communication helps mitigate tensions and share
information, and trust leads to creating a positive environment in which people feel appreciated.
Cooperation can help team members capitalize on their strengths and practice constantly to
address new challenges.

Strategies for Improving Teamwork
Diversity in teams requires different teams with different backgrounds for creativity and
problem-solving. Chapter 9 by Helm-Stevens outlines four strategies for improving teamwork:
diversification of the team, the development of inclusive leadership, the organization of team-
building events, and the use of IT tools (2023). Taking care of inclusive leadership will help all
the employees feel appreciated and valued, thus increasing the group’s morale. Corporate get-
togethers help build effective relationships and enhance communication. Technology enhances
effective communication and knowledge management, mainly when teams work remotely.
In conclusion, knowledge of how to build and enhance work teams is crucial for
organizations to achieve such high-performance results. Therefore, Leaders can drive innovation
and achieve outstanding results by fostering high-performance teams through clear goals, open
communication, ongoing training, collaboration, and trust.
