Instructor Initiated Administrative Drop for non-Satisfactory Academic Progress:
The content in CIS 105 moves quickly and students who fall behind find it very difficult to catch
up. To ensure students are supported and have an opportunity to be successful, an
administrative drop will be performed for students who have not made satisfactory progress by
the end of the grace period on Aug 27, 2023.
A warning will be sent to students who are at risk of an administrative drop for failure to meet
academic progress, on Aug 25, 2023. If the student is not able to make satisfactory progress by
the due date, their name will be submitted for an administrative drop from the course. Please
know if this occurs, you will not receive a W for the class and will not be charged for the class.
Information contained within this syllabus (except grading policies) is subject to change. 3
Administrative drops for non-attendance will be processed after Aug 28, 2023. This may affect
your full-time status at the university. Please note, it is your responsibility to be aware of your
registration status and the impacts a change in registration may have on your academic and
financial records. Please reach out to your academic advisor or success coach for more
information.
Required Textbook and Other Materials
●Applied Business Computing Concepts by Mathew McCarthy
●Excel & SQL Educator by Nick Ball and Gove Allen
CIS 105 is an intensive, 8-week course. To ensure all students have the resources necessary to
achieve success, the required course materials have been integrated into Canvas, and the
associated cost will automatically post to your student account under the header "Digital
Integrated Course Mtrl" approximately two weeks after the start of the class.
To access the materials, you will click on the "MyEducator" eBook links found within the
Modules section of Canvas. The first time you access the eBook links, you'll be prompted to
create an account, but won't be prompted to enter payment information, as the payment will
be covered by the charge noted above.
Can I use my Pell Grant funds to cover the charge?
Not directly. The Pell integration with the ASU Bookstore ends approximately 2 weeks prior to
the start of the semester. Charges for this program aren’t issued until approximately 2 weeks
after the start of the semester, which allows students time to opt out (if desired), or to not be
charged if they drop the class. However, with some planning, you can still reserve Pell funds to
pay for the charge. Any unused Pell Grant funds will be disbursed to you shortly after the
semester starts. So, if you know you have a future Inclusive Access charge for $100, and your
Pell Grant is for $500, be sure to spend no more than $400. When the charge posts, you can use
your Pell refund to cover the balance.
Does this work with my VA funding?
Please work with your case coordinator after the charges post. They’ll know how to proceed.
Technical Requirements
For this course you are required to have access to a computer running the latest updated
version of Windows or MacOS and the latest updated version of Microsoft Office for Windows
or Mac. Alternatively, if you own a Chromebook, iPad, iPad Pro, Android tablet, etc. you can use
the Online Microsoft Excel Web Application using an updated browser (preferably Chrome or
Firefox).
It is strongly recommended that you use the installed version of Office on a Windows or Mac
computer. However, if you do not have one of those devices you can use the Online Web
Applications from Microsoft (specifically Excel). The Online Web Applications should work on

any device that has a current web browser (laptop, Chromebooks, tablets, etc.). However,
Microsoft does update the online version frequently which might cause the MyEducator
assignments to not work correctly all of the time, features within the online version to be
added/removed without warning, and/or the tutorials to be inconsistent/inaccurate.
***If you choose to use the online version of Office, grading exceptions for inaccurate grading,
tutorials not being 100% accurate, or anything else will not be granted.***
Canvas Messaging System
In this course, the Canvas Messaging System to your instructor is reserved for communications
of a personal nature (i.e. should not be shared with the class). Examples of communications of
a personal nature include, but are not limited to, grade appeals, issues with test your skills
assignments, disability accommodation discussions, etc. Please note:
● Direct emails will not be read or responded to. If a direct e-mail is received, you should
expect to receive a message directing you to using the Canvas Messaging System.
● You should also expect messages with questions that are not of a personal nature to be
replied to with a request to post your question in the InScribe Community, so everyone in
the class can benefit from the shared information.
● If you are requesting a grade appeal or for me to review a test your skills
assignment/quiz, please ensure you provide the following information:
○ Detailed information about the error or issue you would like investigated.
○ Screenshots of the error or issue.
○ Your Excel spreadsheet you are working on.
● Failure to provide detailed information may result in a delayed response.
Grading and Course Requirements
Your course grade will be based on your performance on a combination of quizzes, MyEducator
Practice Problems, and MyEducator Test Your Skills assignments. The following weights will be
applied to each grade category:

Use/Availability of Y-Grades
This course adheres to ASU’s A-E +/- grading structure. Y grade options to replace satisfactory
grades will only be used in very rare circumstances after consultation with the instructor. Any
requests must be made and resolved prior to the start of the final week of the class. The
decision to use a Y grade for a student is solely up to the instructor's discretion. Once a request
is granted it is irreversible.
Use/Availability of I-Grades
The grade of “I” (Incomplete) can only be given by an instructor when a student, who is doing
otherwise acceptable work, is unable to complete the last portion of the course (e.g., the last
week's worth of assignments) because of illness or other conditions beyond the student’s
control. Discussions of the "I" grade must begin no less than 1 week prior to the end of the
course. The final decision on if a grade of "I" can be used and the amount of time allowed to
complete the remaining work is solely up to the instructor discretion.
The instructor considers "acceptable work" to be a current grade of C or higher.
Course Policies:
Information contained within this syllabus (except grading policies) is subject to change. 6
CIS 105 is a class in which each week builds upon the next. For this reason, structured due
dates are provided each week to help students stay on track. However, this course also provides
flexibility when needed. It is my hope that the structure below will provide a workable work/life
balance as the course progresses.
Content Availability
●All content is available from the first day of the course. You can work ahead as needed or
take some additional time as needed based on your own personal commitments.
Course Due Dates
●All deliverables during the week are due on Sunday at 11:59PM MST.
○1 Week Grade Period: Any work not received by the due date can be submited
for full credit until the following Sunday at 11:59PM MST.
○Late Submission Period: Any work not received during the grace period can be
submited for points until 11:59PM MST on the last day of the course. The
highest grade you can earn on late work past the grace period is a 75%.
Grade Entry
●Each week the instructor will apply 0's to all work not completed during the prior week.
This is only to prompt students to catch up & ensure they don't get too far behind. Your
grade will update once the work is submited based on the policies listed above.
Last Day of Class
●All work must be submited no later than 11:59PM MST on the last official day of the course. All
outstanding work after this point will be graded as a 0. There are absolutely no exceptions to
this. The 1-week grace period does not apply past the last day of the course.
Quiz/Exam Policy
●Each quiz/exam will consist of 10 questions that will be displayed 1 at a time and
randomly from a large pool of questions (no exam will be the same).
●Quizzes are not time and you can start/stop them until you are ready to submit.
●Your grade will only be calculated once you finish the quiz and click the submit buton.
●You will have two attempts for each quiz and the HIGHEST of the two atempts will be
recorded.
●Only submit your quiz when you are ready for a final score. Extra atempts will not be
provided if students submit their work before they are done.
Excel/SQL Educator Series Practice Problems Policy
●Practice problems will be found typically at the end of each section within a lesson
(some lessons do not have a practice problem).
Information contained within this syllabus (except grading policies) is subject to change. 7
●Practice problems have step by step directions and a video below where you download
the file to help you understand the concepts.
●Your work will automatically grade when you submit it. You will have unlimited attempts
at each practice problem and you will receive the HIGHEST of all your atempts (so keep
working until you get 100%).
●Step by step videos will be provided to help you fill in any gaps you might have and
continue the learning process.
Since practice problems have step by step directions provided for each task, you will be asked to
double check your work against the solutions already provided to you when you encounter an
issue. This is to aid you in troubleshooting your work & identifying any potential details you
might have missed.
Excel/SQL Educator Series Test Your Skills Assignments Policy
●At the end of each lesson in MyEducator a Test Your Skills file will be presented.
●Your work will automatically grade when you submit it.
●You will have two attempts of each assignment but keep in mind the AVERAGE of the
two atempts will be recorded.
●Students do not need to use both atempts if they don’t want to. Only submit your work
when you are ready for a final score. Extra atempts or the deletion of grades will not be
provided if students submit their work before they are done.
●You may submit additional atempts over your allowed two atempts (for practice).
However, your grade will only be calculated based on the first 2 atempts, no exceptions.
●After your 2nd submission, step by step videos will be provided to help you identify the
areas you struggled with and continue the learning process.
**You are required to keep copies of your submited MyEducator files until the end of the
course. If there are any issues with your submissions, your instructor may require the original
and unmodified file to be sent via email. If you are unable to provide the original unmodified
file, you will receive a 0 for the assignment in question.**
Late Policy for Quizzes, Practice Problems, and Test Your Skills assignments
Due to the importance of completing each lesson (as they all build upon each other), this course
has been designed to provide a balance between additional flexibility to accommodate your
unique life situations/obligations while also providing structure for those who need it. The
course will function in the following manner:
●All content is available from the first day of the course. You can work ahead as
needed or take some additional time as needed based on your own personal
commitments.
●All deliverables during the week are due on Sunday at 11:59PM MST (unless
otherwise stated in the schedule).
Information contained within this syllabus (except grading policies) is subject to change. 8
●Any work not received by the due date can be submited for full credit until the
following Sunday at 11:59PM MST (1-week grade period).
●Any work not received during the grace period can be submited for points with a
-25% penalty until 11:59PM MST on the last day of the course. The highest grade
you can earn on late work past the grace period is 75%.
●All work must be submited no later than 11:59PM MST on the last official day of the
course. All outstanding work after this point will be graded as a 0. There are
absolutely no exceptions to this.
●Each week the instructor will apply 0's to all work not completed during the prior
week. This is only to prompt students to catch up & ensure they don't get too far
behind. Your grade will update once the work is submited based on the policies
listed above.
Appeals of Grading
If you wish to appeal grading for any portion of the course, this should be done by writing a
brief email message or leter that explains your concerns. The purpose of a writen appeal is to
allow the instructor to find the student’s grade (from among those of numerous current
students) and to then consider the appeal on its merits without distraction. Student grade
appeals will be reviewed quickly and fairly.
Appeals concerning validity of exam/quiz questions or posted answers must be made within 24
hours of the submission of the quiz.
Other types of grade appeals must be made within 24 hours of the time you submitted.
It is your responsibility to verify grades on Canvas and signal discrepancies to your instructor at
your earliest possible opportunity.
Once the appeal period has passed for any given quiz/exam/assignment, the instructor will not
accept appeal requests.
Extra Credit
There have been 4 extra credit assignments added into the course. By completing each extra
credit assignment, your final grade will be increased by up to 0.5%. The percentage added to
your final grade for each extra credit assignment you atempt will be calculated in the following
manner:
Grade on Extra Credit * 0.5 = Percent Added
Example: 90% earned * 0.5 = 0.45 added to your final grade
Extenuating Circumstances
The above policies are strictly enforced for all students to ensure each student is treated in a fair
and consistent manner. However, the instructor understands that sometimes serious
Information contained within this syllabus (except grading policies) is subject to change. 9
circumstances impact students and reserves the right to modify the policies on a case by case
basis at their own discretion.
To make an informed decision on any potential exceptions to the policies, students will be
required to provide documentation that satisfies the instructor. If no or unsatisfactory
documentation is provided (based on only the instructor's opinion), no exceptions will be made.
It should be noted that the course has been set up to provide the maximum amount of
flexibility to students already, so exceptions to the course policies are extremely rare and should
not be expected.
Academic Integrity
Prior to having access to any of the course material, you will be required to read, understand,
and agree to the Academic Integrity Policies of ASU, W. P. Carey School of Business, and this
CIS105 course. Additional information about the Academic Integrity Policies in this course, W. P.
Carey, and ASU will be discussed in the "Start Here" section.
From the ASU General Catalog: “The highest standards of academic integrity are expected of all
students. Failure to meet these standards may result in suspension or expulsion from the
university and other sanctions as specified in the academic integrity policies of the individual
colleges. Violations of academic integrity include, but are not limited to cheating, fabrication,
tampering, plagiarism, or facilitating such activities…” Specific policies can be found at:
(htp://provost.asu.edu/academicintegrity).
The term “facilitating” includes active or inactive participation in academic dishonesty. Inactive
participation includes silent knowledge of violations. This policy relates to all assignments,
quizzes, and exams for this course. Please be forewarned that your instructor strongly agrees
with this policy, will strive to actively enforce it, and will support punishment for those who
violate it.
●Protect your assignments/quizzes/exams. Don’t leave files on the hard drives of
school computers; don’t share your files, answers, etc. with others.
●Expect to be called in for an interview with the instructor if your
assignments/quizzes/exams are flagged for academic integrity violations.
CIS105 Academic Integrity Policies
We will be utilizing the CIS105 InScribe Community in this course. While you can post about
general topics and problems you encounter, students are not allowed to post about
quiz/knowledge checks or test your skills assignments/tasks. In the event a student violates this
policy, the following consequences apply:
1. For the first offense, a writen warning will be provided to the student.
Information contained within this syllabus (except grading policies) is subject to change. 10
2. For the second offense, the student will receive a 0 on the assignment that was posted
about and their final grade will be reduced to the next lower grade. For example, if the
student has an A at the end of the course, their final grade would go to an A-.
3. For the third or more offenses, the student will receive a 0 on the assignment and will
receive 2 full leter grade reductions to their final grade.
Additionally, CIS105 utilizes the MyEducator platform. MyEducator is an online education
system that provides easy online distribution of digital educational content and a platform that
tracks performance of students. CIS105 utilizes the MyEducator Excel/SQL Educator & Applied
Business Computing Concepts digital content and assignments throughout the course. This
product is used to ensure that undergraduate students acquire the necessary skills in Microsoft
Excel they need to be successful in the rest of their college careers and professional lives.
The Excel/SQL Educator digital content has several lessons that students work through during
the semester. Each lesson is composed of multiple modules that contain reading material,
instructional videos, and practice assignments. At the end of each lesson, the student is
required to complete a graded assignment.
The MyEducator system and Excel/SQL Educator content was developed by individuals who
study academic integrity issues within education. With that being said, please keep the
following in mind when you complete your assignments and exams:
●W. P. Carey & ASU has tools built into the course by experts in the field at detecting
cheating
●The tools built into the course will report when cheating has occurred in the course
●Reports of cheating will be handled as outlined below
●Multiple violations of academic integrity can result in an "XE" (failure due to
academic dishonesty) or dismissal. This can have a direct impact on other college
level decisions down the line.
●Assignments and exams are an individual effort.
Be aware that by enrolling in this course, you agree to:
Homework:
●Download your own copy of the assignments from MyEducator
○Do not share the unique key code that is provided to you for each assignment.
This is directly linked to your account and can not be used by another student.
●Do all assignments by yourself (individually)
○Do not consult with others regarding specific formulas or techniques used to
solve homework assignments.
○Do not use others' work as a reference point.
●Type all formulas into Excel
Information contained within this syllabus (except grading policies) is subject to change. 11
○Do not copy / paste from any other information source. All entries must be
manually typed or filled in using the methods taught in class.
●Upload your own assignments to MyEducator
○Contact the instructor if you are having issues downloading or submitting any of
your MyEducator assignments
●Only upload your work when you are ready to receive a final grade for the
assignment.
○If you have any doubts, ask your instructor before you submit. Once you submit a
file, the grade is final and will not be voided out.
Quizzes/Exams:
●Complete all exams by yourself (individually)
○Canvas Quizzes/Exams are open note / open book / open resource (except for
using another person and/or their work).
○Do not consult with others regarding exam questions
○Do not use others work as a reference point
○Use only the materials that are authorized by the instructor (if any) for
the exams
○Contact the University Technology Helpdesk and copy your instructor if
you have any problems during the exam windows. Please e-mail your
instructor with the ticket number and resolutions proposed by the
helpdesk should any issue arise.
In the event one of your assignments, quizzes, or final exam are flagged for academic integrity
issues, the instructor will proceed with the following course of action:
●For the first 3 MyEducator assignments, if any issues are found with your workbook
submissions you will receive an automatic 0 for the assignment for not following
directions. It is important you follow the directions above when using and submitting
MyEducator assignments.
●After the first 3 MyEducator assignments, academic integrity policies will be
enforced.
○If you are found in violation of the course's policies, you will receive a 0
on the assignment and a 2 letter grade reduction for the first offense.
○If you are found in violation of the course's policies more than once, you
will receive an automatic failing grade in the course and the instructor
will recommend the letter grade of "XE" (Failure due to Academic
Dishonesty) be placed on your transcript. An "XE" will prohibit you from
representing the University in any extracurricular activity or run for (or
hold) office in any recognized student organization. During this time
frame, you will be unable to represent the University in any

and time.
Instructor’s Suggestions for Succeeding in the Course
My goal is for every student to succeed in this course! Accordingly, I will do whatever I can to be
available to answer questions, to explain concepts in alternative ways, and to revisit prior
material. I will also try hard to make this class interesting. However, it is very possible for you to
receive a poor (or failing) grade by ignoring the following suggestions:
●Complete the assignments/quizzes/exams on time
●Ask early (and often) if you need help: Unlike many other online instructors, I am on
the Tempe Campus typically every day of the week during business hours. Feel free
to stop by and ask questions.
●Log into the course daily: This course will go by quickly. If you are not logging in
daily, you are likely to miss something.
●Attend Zoom Office Hours or ASU Tutoring: CIS105 and ASU both have plenty of
opportunities to work with the instructor, TA’s, and ASU Tutors for additional help on the
course. Please take advantage of these times throughout the semester.
●Pay attention/read announcements: I will periodically send out announcements,
please read them. They are really for your benefit, not mine.
●Read and respond to course email messages as needed
●Create a study and/or assignment schedule to stay on track
Disability Resource Center
Every effort will be made to accommodate students with disabilities. When requesting
accommodations for a disability, students should register with the Disability Resource Center
(DRC), and then submit appropriate documentation through it.
(htp://www.asu.edu/aad/manuals/ssm/ssm701-01.html). Please note, DRC accommodations
are not retroactive so please reach out to your DRC advisor as soon as possible. To contact the
DRC, please visit htps://eoss.asu.edu/drc.
Please review the follow about various accommodations:
If you are a student who has received alternative formats as an accommodation, each eBook
allows you to download an ePub and/or a PDF that you can read. Additionally, PDFs of the
Information contained within this syllabus (except grading policies) is subject to change. 13
PowerPoints have also been provided in Canvas. If you need additional assistance, please
contact your instructor.
If you are a student who has received extended time on timed quizzes as an accommodation,
please note this course does not use timed quizzes, so no time extensions are able to be
provided.
If you are a student who has received flexible due dates as an accommodation, please note this
course has weekly due dates but already provides a 1-week grace period with no penalty. If you
feel this 1-week grace period is not enough, please reach out to the instructor. The instructor
will work with your SAILS advisor to beter understand appropriate next steps. To ensure
consistency and good communication the instructor approaches this accommodation with the
following in mind:
●Requests at least 24 hours advance notice from a student who is potentially needing to
use the flexible deadlines accommodation. This provides both of us a reasonable
amount of time to have a conversation about what has been going on and come up with
an action plan. Ensuring good communication is key in these situations.
●When communicating the need for this accommodation, the instructor needs students
to clearly identify the assignment(s) they are running into issues with. This ensures that
we are both on the same page about the situation.
●Once a due date or grace period passes, the accommodation will not be applied (so it is
key to communicate as soon as possible).
●The longest time frame the instructor usually accepts late work under the
accommodation is 3 days (this varies depending on the specific situation). The reason for
no longer than 3 days based on experience, the instructor has seen students get into a
worse spot by pushing out deadlines – essentially it is a snowball effect. Based on when
you communicate and the situation, we’ll find the most reasonable timeframe that
works.
Emailing through Canvas is the best way to reach out to the instructor about these situations.
Please keep in mind, this accommodation does not provide additional time after the course
ends as this would be a fundamental alteration of the course.
