CDE312: Module 6 Case Study Part A
1. What characteristics of interpersonal development are shown by Yesmina’s
changing relationship with her friends and romantic relationships?
Yesmina’s changing relationships may be due to the fact that she is learning to be more
intimate with people. She uses terms like friend, trustworthy, kind, and supportive. She
also has common interests with her friends and Juan which is probably why they spend so
much time together. I would think that Yesmina and Juan are also Daring since they
decided to have sex. They must have been willing to disclose private information during
all the times that they were inseparable and since they did a very private activity together.
Yasmina is also Caring since she seems to have a <positive network of friends=. I assume
that means that she is concerned for their well-being as they care for her. Her friend
group has mainly stayed the same, except now not only is it the same-sex clique but now
a mixed-sex clique.
2. How is Yesmina’s relationship with Juan different from her previous romantic
relationships?
Yesmina’s relationship with Juan is different from her previous romantic relationships
because adolescents at her age are having more serious relationships. Her parents said
that her past relationships seemed to be short-lived possibly because they were based on
superficial factors such as looks or popularity. Teens her age are now more focused on an
actual relationship that values a true connection, communication, and personality rather
than just sexual interest. Before Juan, Yesmina was younger and may have liked boys and
had some sexual fantasies, but not that she is old enough and she has a real connection
with Juan she is ready to take the next step.
3. How does Yesmina’s and Juan’s decision to have sex fit with what we know about
adolescent sexual activity?
Yesmina and Juan are at the typical age that most teens are sexually active (mid to late
adolescence). They are now capable of intimacy and sharing relationships rather than
focusing mainly on sexual interest. The fact that their friends and older siblings are
having sex makes them what to go forward with their decision. This also means that their
sexual behavior is more expressive at this point in their lives.
4. Should Yesmina’s parents be concerned about her sexual activity?
Yesmins’s parents should not be too concerned about her sexual activities, because she is
past the age that says she understands the consequences of unprotected sex if she was
properly taught. I believe she was properly taught to protect herself since she and Juan
decided to use a condom during their sexual activities. The only thing I would
recommend Yesmina’s parents to do if they haven’t already is to suggest that she
considers going on birth control to make sure she is fully protected from teen parenthood
as well.
