Part 4
Strategic planning in any organization is crucial, as it helps define the direction and goal of any
organization and adequately utilize resources. Two critical initiatives in strategic management
are Mission and Vision and Self Appraisal. However, these concepts provide initial direction and
promote sustaining improvement initiatives within organizations. This summary examines the
importance and relevance of these concepts in organizational strategic planning as evidenced by
the existing literature.
The concept of mission and vision statements are fundamental to strategic planning. The mission
declares an organization's main tasks and priorities, and the vision reveals long-term goals and
the ideal result. These are instrumental in decision-making and coordinating activities in an
organization that are in line with respective objectives. According to Dobrinić and Fabac (2021),
clear mission statements enhance organizational performance through meaningful direction and
team member conduct. Some suggest that this mission statement is a communication channel that
transmits the organization's values, strategic goals, and objectives.
Furthermore, Djordjevic (2021) points out that vision statements also help motivate the human
resource. The empirical evidence also shows that organizations with sound and inspirational
vision statements perform better in the market. Vision statements generate the perception of the
need to act now and to aim high, fostering efficiency and future-oriented strategic thinking. For
example, the healthcare organization could have a mission statement that deals with delivering
quality services to the patients and a vision statement that deals with becoming a premier
organization regarding medical breakthroughs and patient satisfaction.
Another factor relating to strategic planning includes internal and external self-assessment.
Strategic methods like the SWOT analysis aid in analyzing the strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities, and threats of organizations and sectors. As Abujraiban and Assaf (2022) pointed
out, SWOT evaluation is practical in strategic planning since it gives an overall picture of the
internal and external factors. This global approach helps organizations adopt remedies that build
on existing strengths, correct organizational weaknesses, exploit favourable environments, and
protect against unfavourable environments.
The authors George, Walker, and Monster also acknowledge that SWOT analysis is a dynamic
framework and should be conducted periodically. Their findings determined that organizations
that engage in SWOT analysis more often are always in a better position to manage change and
remain relevant in the market. Self-appraisal through SWOT analysis involves acquiring
information from different organizational levels and from outside the organization. This gives a
balanced view of the issue and encourages the organization's employees to participate in
formulating strategies. For example, a technology company may use SWOT analysis to evaluate
its innovative capacity and skills (strengths and weaknesses) and analyze the markets for
innovation (opportunities and threats).
Ensuring that the mission and vision statements align with self-appraisal processes is crucial for
improving the effectiveness of strategic planning. Where internal assessment is aligned with an
organization's fundamental values and its strategic vision, an organization can be confident that
its strategies make sense and are appropriately directed. For example, if the non-profit
organization under discussion focuses on environmental conservation, the mission and vision
statements must correlate with the SWOT analysis, and the defined opportunities and strategies
must correspond to the organization's sustainability and community engagement goals.
Thus, mission and vision statements and self-evaluation tools, including SWOT analysis, are
valuable to the strategic management process. These concepts give organizations clear direction,
vision, and a model of how improvement can and should occur. The integration of these concepts
allows organizations to improve their strategic management approaches, making it easier to
make strategic choices that align with the organizational values and vision while simultaneously
being able to adapt to the outside environment. The literature review of the topic supports the
importance of these ideas, showing how they affect the performance of organizations and
competitive advantage.
Part 5
Strategic planning is a critical component of organizational development that outlines direction
and utility while facilitating the effective use of available resources. Two crucial concepts stand
out within strategic planning: Mission and Vision and Self Appraisal. Vision and mission
statements provide a starting point as they outline the existence and direction an organization
should take in the future. However, self-assessment techniques like the SWOT analysis provide a
structured approach to ongoing improvement for the organization. This paper explores the
importance and application of these concepts in strategic management as informed by theory
while showing how these aspects foster organizational performance and responsiveness.
A mission and vision statement are the foundation of any strategic planning process. The mission
informs the organization's focus and critical activities, whereas the vision reflects the
organization's long-term goals and ideal state. These statements are used in decision-making to
ensure organizational activities focus on a common aim. According to Dobrinić and Fabac
(2021), clear mission statements contribute to organizational effectiveness by setting direction
and defining expected conduct. They contend that a mission statement is an organizational
communication instrument through which an organization transmits its values and strategic
directions to recipients.
Furthermore, according to Djordjevic (2021), vision statements help create team member
motivation. It has also been found that companies with well-defined and inspiring vision
statements perform better than others. A vision statement gives a sense of purpose and need for
change and growth, thus stimulating creativity and strategic thinking. For example, the mission
of a healthcare organization might be to deliver high-quality and accessible patient services,
while the vision is to be a leading healthcare provider focusing on innovation and patient
satisfaction.
Internal and external evaluation is another crucial factor in strategic planning, commonly called
self-assessment. Tools like SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) assist an
organization in understanding its current state and its potential for development. Abujraiban and
Assaf (2022) emphasize the applicability of SWOT analysis in strategic planning because it
covers internal strengths and weaknesses and external opportunities and threats. This global
perspective helps organizations design strategies that build on their strengths, overcome
weaknesses, exploit opportunities, and minimize threats.
George, Walker, and Monster (2019) suggest that SWOT analysis is not a one-time exercise but
should be conducted periodically due to the dynamic business environments. According to their
research, companies that use SWOT analysis are more often prepared for changes and can stay
competitive. Self-appraisal through SWOT analysis implies using data from different
organizational levels and external sources. This approach provides a balanced view and
encourages team member engagement in the strategic processes. For instance, a technological
firm develops a SWOT that follows technological strengths, organizational weaknesses, new
market opportunities, and industry threats.
Lack of integration of mission and vision statements with self-appraisal processes can
significantly affect an organization's strategic planning effectiveness. When internal assessment
procedures mirror organizational values and future objectives well, organizations can be
confident that their strategies are consistent. For example, a non-profit organization for
environmental conservation may link its mission and vision with the SWOT analysis to ensure
that the chances and strategies fit with its mandate of environmental conservation and engaging
the community.
Thus, mission and vision statements and self-assessment using tools such as SWOT analysis are
critical elements of strategic management. These concepts help organizations to have a focused
vision and serve as a guide to growth and development. When properly incorporated, these
concepts help organizations improve their strategic development and management while
maintaining their core values, mission stability and adaptability to environmental changes. There
is literature backing these ideas regarding its effects on organizational performance and
competitive advantage.
