Information Technology And IoT Roles In Business
1. What role has information technology and the IoT played in helping organizations
benefit their business?
Information technology and the IoT have played significant roles in helping organizations
improve businesses and increase total profit. The two have helped organizations increase
productivity and efficiency through automation and optimization of business processes. For
instance, the IoT sensors reduce business downtime by allowing monitoring equipment, making
it easy to predict possible breakdowns and, in turn, do maintenance on time. Information
technology and the IoT play essential roles by creating room for innovations and developing new
products and services, enabling the organization to generate new revenue (Rejeb et al., 2020).
IoT technologies enable tracking movement of goods and services and inventory management,
thus improving supply chain efficiency. Organizations that have invested in IoT devices can
easily monitor and manage risks such as cyber threats more effectively through data protection
and risk monitoring. Information technology and IoT devices enable huge data collection, which,
when analyzed, enables the organization to make informed decisions and identify new
opportunities.
The IoT has several challenges that require broad approach, especially with today's evolving
technologies. Complying with regulations and standards that govern data privacy and security

makes it difficult to keep up with the evolving regulatory requirements (Nizetic et al., 2020). The
cost of procuring and maintaining the required infrastructure for IoT solutions may surpass the
business objective. IoT devices depend on power for operations, making it hard to regulate
power consumption, especially in remote areas or areas with power shortages. The technology
involves massive data generation and collection, which sometimes overwhelms the system,
making it difficult to get meaningful insights (Sadeeq et al., 2021). Maintaining scalability and
integration of IoT devices is difficult since its ecosystem involves many devices from different
vendors with different proprietary protocols. Other factors, such as power outages and networks,
affect the IoT devices, questioning reliability and performance during the interruption.
