Introduction
Employee compensation is one of the major components of any organization. Employee
compensation is important as it attracts new talent, leads to job satisfaction, emplo yee retention,
motivates employees' produ, activity and ensures employees comply with laws and regulations
(Anugra et al., 2023). This paper explores how Aflac connects its total rewards to its
organizational values and goals. The analysis will cover how Aflac uses its products to enhance
total compensation, the internal and external strengths and weaknesses identified, examples of
traditional and non-traditional rewards, how the company aligns its compensation benefits with
its corporate values, and recommendations for expanding the benefits programs.
Use of own products to enhance compensation for employees
Aflac uses its products by providing insurance products and giving employees enhanced
coverage plans, which include cancer, critical illness and accident insurance. This package not
only helps the organization reduce cost but also protects the employees and their families. In
addition, these packages create a deeper connection between employees and the products they
deliver. These packages give employees a better understanding of the products, hence
encouraging them to promote the product and encourage people to use these products.
Internal and external strengths and weaknesses
An internal strength identified is Aflac's strong brand recognition, as it is known for its
insurance products, its good and effective marketing and its recognizable impact on society. An
internal weakness identified is high operational cost as it is very expensive to maintain an
extensive insurance coverage for all employees and their families. An external strength identified
is positive public perception as people have learnt about Aflac and its impact in the society and
3
have come to embrace it. External weakness identified is economic downturns, which can lead to
instability, reducing insurance products offered to employees.
Response to Internal and external strengths and weaknesses
Aflac addresses internal and external factors through strategic initiatives. Internally, the
company invests in employee development and wellness programs to maintain high morale and
productivity. Externally, Aflac actively monitors market trends and regulatory changes, adapting
its product offerings and business strategies accordingly. For example, during economic
downturns, Aflac might emphasize the affordability and value of its supplemental insurance
products.
Traditional and non-traditional rewards
Some of the traditional rewards Aflac uses include competitive salaries, which help
attract and retain employees and encourage them to give their best (Sorn et al., 2023). Health
insurance is another traditional reward Aflac uses that covers medical, vision and dental care.
Non-traditional rewards that Aflac uses include flexible work schedules for its employees and
telecommuting options. Aflac also provides a comprehensive insurance plan and wellness
programs for its employees to support their physical and mental health.
Meeting organizational objectives
These rewards help meet Aflac’s organizational objectives by ensuring that employees are
healthy, satisfied, and motivated (Adler, 2022). The comprehensive benefits package helps
reduce turnover, increase productivity, and enhance employee engagement, directly contributing
to Aflac’s success. Additionally, offering health insurance to employees promotes their well-
4
being ensuring no absentees at work. There are also employee recognition programs that increase
motivation which encourages high performance as it acknowledges the best performers.
Alignment of Compensation Benefits with Corporate Values
Aflac’s compensation benefits align closely with its corporate values of customer-
centricity, innovation, and integrity. The company’s focus on providing financial protection is
mirrored in its employee benefits, which emphasize health and financial security. By offering its
own insurance products to employees, Aflac ensures that its workforce is well-protected,
reflecting its commitment to comprehensive care. Furthermore, the company’s investment in
wellness programs and flexible work arrangements demonstrates a commitment to employee
well-being and work-life balance, aligning with its values of integrity and respect.
Recommendations for Expanding Benefits Programs
Aflac should consider introducing financial wellness programs such as financial planning
workshops, student loans and repayment assistance and dept management resources (Stühlinger,
2022). These programs can help employees reduce financial stress and stability which helps them
focus enhancing their productivity. Additionally, the employees should receive enhanced mental
health support by improving their access to mental health facilities and resources. The employee
should have mental health days where they are able to talk about their troubles, they should have
access to therapists and have resilience training programs.
Conclusion
Aflac effectively connects its total rewards to its organizational values and goals by using
its own products to enhance compensation, addressing internal and external factors through
strategic responses, and offering a mix of traditional and non-traditional rewards. By aligning its
5
benefits with its corporate values and continually seeking to expand its offerings, Aflac ensures
that it remains an employer of choice, attracting and retaining top talent while driving
organizational success. Implementing the recommended expansions to the benefits programs
would further solidify this alignment and support the achievement of Aflac’s long-term goals.
