The Fast-Paced Life of Suburban Areas
Introduction
Frank and April Johnson had just met. Their friendship built up fast and later translated
into a relationship. After speaking for a few minutes, Frank would call April honey, although it is
a name reserved for lovers. Within five minutes of meeting, the two were already dancing
together. The author describes this by saying, "Five minutes later, dancing, he found that the
small of April Johnson's back rode as neatly in his hand as if it had been made for that purpose."
(Yates 21). A week later, the two characters are in bed together, with Johnson telling Frank he is
the most interesting person she has ever met. Their lives are so fast-paced that the reader is left
out when it comes to knowing how often the two individuals communicated before they got
intimate. Next, the two are in a car as Frank drives to get them home. At home, they take a few
drinks, Johnson cries, and they get intimate again. The engagement between Frank and Johnson
presents an excellent picture of suburban life, where situations occur faster than usual,
contributing to the fast-paced life.
The Fast-Paced Life of Suburban Areas
The characters' role in the story contributes to the identification of urban life as a fast-
paced one. Frank plays a key role in making their friendship progress fast. He is the one who
approaches Johnson, and they start conversing. Also, he takes Johnson to his place twice within
the short scene where they get intimate (Yates 21). He takes an active role in this, such as when

he drives Johnson to his place. Had he opted to do these activities at a slower pace, the lives of
the two characters would not have been seen as fast-paced. Frank's role proves that in suburban
areas, men actively encourage the fast-paced life.
Johnson also has a role in showing that life is fast-paced, although her role is minor. She
shows this through the conclusion she makes concerning Frank. As the two lie next to each other,
Johnson tells Frank he is the most interesting person she has ever met (Yates 21). The statement
makes the reader question the number of people Johnson has met or whether she is genuine about
Frank being the most interesting person she has ever met. One does not decide that the person
they have just met is the most interesting unless they are more interested than what they see at
face value, such as when one loves the other. Otherwise, spending more time with someone is
necessary before deciding that they are the most interesting person. Therefore, the quick rate at
which Johnson decides that Frank is the most interesting person she has met shows how fast-
paced life is in the suburban areas.
From the story, a key theme comes up that shows that life in suburban areas is fast-paced,
and it is the theme of trust. The rate of trusting each other between the two characters is fast. The
different events cannot occur between people who do not trust each other. Before a person sleeps
with another, many questions go through their mind. For example, a person starts imagining
whether the other person has diseases that can be sexually transmitted. Additionally, there are
questions about the ability of the other individual to be responsible enough as a parent if the two
get a child they had not planned for. Due to such questions, people spend more time before
getting intimate with others. In some cases, they still take precautionary measures after taking a
long time before committing to sleeping with the other person. However, sleeping together

between the two characters only takes one week. Within this time, they have trusted each other
enough for them to engage sexually. Hence, the rate of acquiring trust in suburbs is fast-paced.
Conclusion
Frank and April Johnson had only met, and they started engaging in activities normally
taking a long time before people engage in them, proving that life in suburban areas is fast-
paced. The two characters met and danced together after five minutes and then got intimate in
one week, proving that they were strangers with high trust towards each other. Johnson makes a
quick conclusion that Frank is an interesting person even though she has not spent much time
with Frank. The passage shows that people in the suburbs engage in activities faster than others
since events that would normally take longer take a much shorter time.
