Factors Affecting Respiration
Respiration is influenced by several factors, namely the type and number of
substrates, oxygen availability, temperature, humidity, plant type and age, and
respiration inhibitors.
1. Types and quantities of substrates
Substrates in plants are important ingredients in the respiration process. If
the substrate content is low, then the respiration rate is also low and vice
versa.
2. Oxygen availability
The availability of oxygen affects the rate of respiration. However, there is
generally more oxygen in the air than is needed by plants in respiration.
Fluctuations in oxygen content in the air have little effect on the rate of
plant respiration.
3. Temperature
Temperature is a factor that greatly affects the rate of respiration. The
higher the temperature, the higher the respiration rate. However, the
increase in respiration rate also depends on each species.
4. Moisture
The effect of humidity on the respiratory rate as well as the effect shown
on temperature. High temperatures will cause low plant moisture levels and
vice versa. The lower the humidity level, the lower the respiration rate and
vice versa.
5. Types and lifespans of plants
Each plant has a different metabolic rate. The process of respiration and
metabolism is directly proportional. In young plants, the respiration rate is
high because the metabolic rate is also high because it is still in the growth
period. Meanwhile, in older plants, the respiration rate is lower.
6. Respiration inhibitors
Respiration inhibitors include cyanide, fluoride, acetate ions, carbon
monoxide, ater, acetone, and chloroform. These substances are chemical
substances that can also affect plant growth and development.
