The BTS ARMY: How K-Pop Fandom Shapes Identity and Community
Introduction
BTS is a seven-member South Korean boy band that started gaining international
popularity in 2013(Bora, 2020). Their music, a mix of various styles and dealing with social
concerns, has found fans in millions of people (Ramadhina et al.,2024). Among the numerous
fans and fan groups in contemporary pop culture, the most popular and significant one is the
BTS fans called the ARMY (Adorable Representative M. C. for Youth) (Bora, 2020). This global
phenomenon presents a rather interesting example of how passion can become a unifying factor
and a critical characteristic of a group worldwide. In the same way, the ARMY has evolved into a
powerful force with immense cultural and economic power.

Demographics and Diversity
The BTS ARMY is a very diverse group in terms of age, gender, and nationality, contrary
to what many may expect (Ayyppaswamy, 2021). This fan base consists of college students in
the US, white-collar employees in South Korea, and high school students in Brazil (Nam et al.,
2024). Education levels among the members also differ from secondary education in the
2
Philippines to post-graduate education in Germany, and occupations vary from factory workers
in Mexico to business people in Singapore (Kim & Hutt, 2021). The fandom is popular and
represented in different countries, including Argentina and Australia, with larger concentrations
in Indonesia, France, and Canada. This diversity is an advantage, as it helps connect millions of
fans worldwide and share cultural references (Saraswati, 2020).
The group uphold and promotes different sentiments, such as self-love, mental health,
and support for others (Hing, 2022). Moreover, the group’s “Love Yourself” series and
partnership with UNICEF encourage fans to participate in charity and self-improvement (Nam et
al., 2024). Essentially, streaming events are managed, music sales are promoted, and charity
campaigns are coordinated with the help of ARMY on Twitter (Chung, 2022). Their advocacy
has also raised large funds for issues such as COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter (Bora, 2020).
This ability to mobilize and influence has attracted the attention of marketers and political
strategists (Hing, 2022). According to Kim and Hutt (2021), this represents a participatory
culture whereby fans embrace social change. The phenomenon of the global BTS ARMY
remains a daily growing one (Ramadhina, 2024) that unites millions of fans worldwide who
appreciate and enjoy Korean music and culture (Fatima, 2022). This cross-cultural fandom
encourages sharing experiences and increases awareness of Korean culture and practices (Ahn,
2021).

Psychological Analysis
The BTS ARMY is one of the best examples of a contemporary fandom with
psychological and cultural implications (Saputri & Lammertz, 2024). The group also affirms the
value of the patient and fosters social integration through different mechanisms. The aspects of
support and sharing of experiences are the reasons why individuals become members of groups
on the social networking site. Furthermore, participating in group activities like charity work and
fan art production provides an accomplishment (Saputri & Lammertz, 2024). It is clear that the
messages of appreciation by BTS to their fans and the encouragement of a healthy body image,
which is a major characteristic of this fandom, contribute positively to self-conception.
Interestingly, the positive influence preserves not only the entity of the subjects but also
maintains healthy social interactions between people. On this note, the ARMY members'
collaborative efforts create constructive engagement since they feel they are in a community with
a common agenda (Jung, 2023). However, as they say, there is no perfection in this world, and
the same thing can be said for this group. The group does experience several negative activities,
including defending the group on social media from what the members see as criticism and
4
conflict between the fans of the TV program (Saraswati, 2020). However, as mentioned
occasionally, these concerns do not define the fandom's primary purpose of building and
supporting positive communities and collaborative works, which is why the show and its fandom
remain beloved and enduring today.
Notably, the ARMY group influences culture, beliefs, economic processes, and
entertainment in several ways. One of the dynamics of this influence is the co-creation activities
that BTS has with its fan base. This includes the creation of fan art, translation of BTS content,
and creation of music covers (Jenkins et al., 2013). Such collaboration not only improves the
overall fandom experience but is also considered among the main factors influencing BTS'
success on the international level. It has helped build an interdependent relationship between
artists and fans as both are involved and benefit from the production of the artwork (Jenkins et
al., 2013).
Furthermore, the combination of such components puts the ARMY at the top of the list of the
most relevant pop culture movements of the present day. Hence, entertainment is a platform for
social and cultural interactions. Moreover, the group is known to be involved in discourses about
the group's culture and language, history, and social problems (Hing, 2022). This interaction is
impressively expansive, which forms a wide range of cultural relations and channels of
communication that are beyond the concept of entertainment.
Moreover, the ARMY’s powers are not only limited to entertainment domains, but they
are also effective in education and activism (Jenkins et al., 2013). It is evident that fans are
knowledgeable about the Korean culture and language and take the initiative in spreading the
information within the fandom and outside. This kind of organic impartation of culture helps
spread and promote Korean culture around the world and increase the recognition and
5
appreciation of it as well. Furthermore, the group has proved capable of rallying for various
social causes more often than not whose ideas are drawn from BTS activism (Jung, 2023). The
ARMY also exerts direct economic effects through their combination of their enthusiasm in
promoting BTS ‘s music and products has broken records in the entire music industry. This
economic impact goes beyond products and services, as the ARMY’s actions may also increase
the sales of tourist attractions and cultural goods from South Korea.
Also, it is worth stating that the ARMY and the ways it operates in the social media era
have changed the focus on fans (Jung, 2023). Their capacity to set topics trending worldwide,
convene virtual conferences, and build online communities is interesting for marketers and
researchers. This digital clout not only aids BTS but also makes fan communities as influential
forces that can impact people’s opinions and culture. In other words, the BTS ARMY is not
merely a group of fans, but is a new breed of fans, who are connected on a global platform,
exerting cultural impact and socially responsible (Saputri & Lammertz, 2024). Despite having its
roots in the sphere of music and entertainment, it is not limited to the mentioned but has been
influential in various facets of life, including self- development, cross-cultural interactions,
economy, and social justice. This fact once again proves the modern transformation of fan-
oriented communities into active participants in the globalized world.
Conclusion
The BTS ARMY is an excellent example of how today's fan bases are not just fans who
prefer artists but power players in society. This community has developed the correct and
coherent population culture where everyone can feel welcome to create and advance. Since
people are getting more connected due to the advancement of technology, understanding the
behaviours of such fandoms contributes to understanding group behaviour, operations of social
6
media, and the role of social pressure in modern society. The transformation of ARMY from
being a few fans to a community that actively influences the world is the best proof of how
enthusiasm can transform a person and a set of people. An insight into such a phenomenon group
becomes even more critical in understanding the contemporary world and people's actions, as
fandoms are active and developing while slowly shaping cultural and justice movements.
