Interview and Reflection
The social, academic, and professional structures at the centre of a pluralistic world
amplify personalities and prepare us to play ethical and just characters in the grand theatre. This
reflection expands on how biases affect people in their private and working environments and
brings understanding of how those biases may be overcome in order to operate within diversity.
The foundation for the essay is an interview with an individual of a different race within the
health profession regarding how biases have affected his life and work.
Interview Questions
1. What role does your racial or cultural background play regarding your chosen career in
healthcare?
2. Tell us of a time when you experienced bias or discrimination at the workplace.
3. What was the impact of this experience for your professional growth or advancement?
4. How have you dealt with biases and stereotype in your working experience?
5. Considering your background, how does it affect your relations with the patients and the other
colleagues?
Interview Summary
I interviewed Dr. Hernandez, a male of Hispanic origin who has been a nurse practitioner
for years. He said that his culture has had both a positive and a negative impact on his work. He
can easily relate to Hispanic patients due to his background, but he has experienced
discrimination from coworkers and managers. He narrated an instance where he applied for a
supervisory position but never got the job despite being qualified; he said it was due to subtle
discrimination. The patients themselves are apt to remarking on him as being very proficient and

this comment underscores their stereotype. Such exposures have served him well by enhancing
his empathy and commitment to dispelling stereotypes in his practice.
Personal Identity and Beliefs
to define myself and ponder over values, experiences, and cultural background, I can see
that my perceptions of people have been shaped to a great extent by context. Since I lived in
multicultural neighbourhoods during childhood, I was privileged to encounter people of different
ethnic backgrounds; however, I still had implicit prejudices within me that influenced my
thoughts. Reflecting on my experiences in college and working environments I have learned how
to counter these biases and have gained a more profound appreciation of diversity and inclusion.
Learning from the Interview
This interview was informative as it made me understand how biases are not always as
obvious as people think in a professional context. This made me understand that one must always
be careful of own prejudice and that self-reflection should be a continuous process. With this
knowledge, one can then proceed to change and improve this biased state of affairs for the better.
Overcoming and Preventing Biases
To address and avoid prejudices in performance-related experiences, I shall exhibit self-
reflection and attempt to gain knowledge about various cultures and diverse populations through
cultural sensitivity seminars and courses. Further, I will look for more sources of information and
ensure I use inclusive language and fair approaches in my evaluation to eliminate biases.
Establishing an environment that facilitates discussion on biases and discrimination is essential.
Positive changes in workplace such as increased respect for diversity can make workplace
environment more amiable and fair for everyone (Kiradoo, 2022).
Continuing Education and Non-Biased Interactions
4
In light of my professional practice as a lifelong learner, I will avail myself to the latest
research on diversity and inclusion, engage in professional development activities, and promote
equity in all spheres of my practice. I shall act based on what I learn from practising and
embracing diversity and inclusiveness.
Educating Others
I want to be someone who guides others to understand biases and be able to recognize
them in the workplace and the wider society. Thus, through such practical activities as
workshops, seminars, and discussion groups on prejudice and cultural competencies, I can
disclose essential experiences and facts from interviews like that one with Dr. Hernandez. This
exercise has benefited my personal as well as my professional development in a diverse global
society. The interview provided an insight into how biases can shape people's lives, and the
emphasis on the constant evaluation and learning process followed this.
