A balanced diet is a collection of foods containing different nutrients essential to the human
body. It is called balanced because the portions are divided according to the need for the
nutrients they contain. The diet has been mostly encouraged since childhood. Most people
believe they should take it in but instead proceed to eat junk food that puts our health at risk. A
balanced diet contains carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, roughage, and water.
They assist in weight management, improve mental health, enhance immune function, better
digestion and gut health, and prevent diseases.
Firstly, a balanced diet assists in weight management. Taking in the right number of calories
reduces the risk of obesity. For most men this will mean consuming no more than 1,900 calories
a day, and for most women, no more than 1,400 calories a day. Being overweight mostly occurs
when we take in more calories than we burn. Being overweight causes heart disease. To prevent
this, it is most advisable to take a balanced diet that contains more proteins such as meat, eggs,
dairy, and cereals, and less carbohydrates and healthy fats. Taking a lot of refined carbohydrates,
little protein, and minimal healthy fats that do not make you hungry prevents overeating, which
is an overweight management strategy.
In addition, immune functions are improved by a balanced diet. Thus, proper nutrition is
important in boosting the immune system since it enables the human body to get all the nutrients
it requires. Among them, vitamins C and D, zinc, and selenium maintain immunity, while
various proteins, fats, and carbohydrates are needed to supply power to the immune cells. This
…means that taking a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins guarantees the
human body of these nutrients so vital in the production and functionality of white blood cells,
antibodies, and other immunological parts. Also, adequate nutrition ensures that there is a good
population of favorable gut bacteria that play the role of modulating the immune system to
counteract pathogens.
