GMO Foods
I completely support GMO foods. Despite the alleged downsides of the products, there
are plenty of benefits that can be realized by adopting these foods. Genetically Modified
Organisms (GMO) refer to plants and animals whose genome is laboratory engineered to favor
desired physiological traits. Genome engineering results in a generation of plants or animals with
enhanced biological products. Genetic engineering has long been practiced in crop farming,
livestock production, and pet breeding using species whose offspring possess desirable traits.
Apparently, GMO products have been around for quite some time and form part of our everyday
life in research, medicine, agriculture, and environmental management. Genetic engineering in
plants, animals, bacteria, and other micro-organisms has allowed the transfer of desired traits
from a particular plant or animal to another to create new foods.
Unlike selective breeding, which can lead to undesirable traits, GMOs help transfer only
the desired trait. The desirable traits that come with GMO foods have numerous benefits to
humans. Such benefits include more nutrition, enhanced taste, drought-resistant plants, fast-
maturing animals and plants, and lower cost food. GMOs' application in agriculture has resulted
in crops and animals with increased yield, nutritional quality, resistance to pests and diseases,
and improved food security. The salmon fish, for instance, has been genetically modified to
mature faster and grow bigger. GMOs' ability to tolerate frost, drought, salt, boron, and other

stressful environments allows plants and animals to habit areas they would otherwise not have.
Some people have continually expressed concerns such as allergy and harmful genetic reactions,
which are unsubstantiated. However, several scientific institutions, including the US Food and
Drug Administrations (FDA), consider GMO foods safe for consumption.
