Vegetable plant 3 type: Tomatoes
Cultivar 1
Name ‘Roma’
Description Prized for its use in tomato paste and sauces, Roma produces a large harvest of
thick-walled, meaty, bright red, egg-shaped tomatoes about 3 inches long and with
few seeds. This tomato is not juicy. This is not a slicing tomato. Instead, the flesh is
thick and drier so that it will cook down into a thick sauce. Cooking intensifies flavor,
too. If you can tomatoes, make your own spaghetti sauce, or like to chop a tomato
into an omelet, this is a great choice. It’s not too juicy in the pan compared to slicing
tomatoes. The fruit freezes well for later cooking, too.

Cultivar 2
Name ‘Summer Set’
2
ABS 360 Southwest Home Gardening
Description High temperatures don’t usually affect fruit set on Summer Set tomato. This hybrid
tomato has the genes to set fruit even during summer’s intense heat. The large,
globe-shaped tomatoes boast a firm texture and ripen relatively quickly. Count on
Summer Set to add classic tomato flavor to salads and sandwiches. Fruit resists
cracking even during the rainiest growing conditions. Since plants are only semi-
determinate, plan to stake or cage them at the time of planting.

Decide if you will grow your vegetable plants from seeds, bulbs, tubers or
transplants in the Phoenix area.
For my sweet corn and cucumbers, I will grow my vegetable plant from seeds. I choose this propagation
method because the seeds can be planted directly into the soil at planting date and harvest properly. As
for my tomatoes, I would grow my fruit plant from transplant. I would sow my seeds indoors around the
end of January or early February, so that it is ready to transplant in April. This is to make sure that frost is
avoided and helps give the tomatoes a health head start.
