Jean Louise “Scout” Finch: Narrator of the story, beginning with her recollections at age six.
Jeremy Atticus “Jem” Finch: Scout’s brother, four years older than Scout.
Charles Baker “Dill” Harris: Neighbor and friend to Scout and Dill, about Scout’s age, who lives in Mississippi, but spends summers next door to the Finch family.
Miss Rachel Haverford: Dill’s aunt (lives next door to the Finch family).
Atticus Finch: Father to Scout and Jem; He is a lawyer and part-time legislator.
Calpurnia: The Finch’s black housekeeper. She is like a mother to the children, and their birth mother died before Scout can remember.
Aunt Alexandra: Sister of Atticus. She is very concerned about the culture and sophistication of the two children, especially Scout.
Francis Hancock: Grandson to Alexandra. Annoys and teases Scout.
Uncle Jack Finch: Atticus’ brother, a bachelor and doctor.
Arthur “Boo” Radley: A mysterious, middle-aged man who lives in the “haunted” Radley house. The children have never seen him, and curiosity drives them to find a way to lure him outside for a look at him.

Nathan Radley: Brother of Boo Radley
Zeebo: Calpurnia’s son, also local trash truck driver and church deacon
Miss Maudie Atkinson: Neighbor and adult friend to the kids. Offers them advice and counseling.
Miss Stephanie Crawford: The neighborhood gossip.
Tom Robinson: A black man on trial, accused of raping a white woman. He is represented by Atticus Finch.
Helen Robinson: Tom Robinson’s wife.
Bob Ewell: Patriarch of the Ewell family, well-known for being a lazy alcoholic with little ambition and no money. He’s got many children, all of whom live in squalor in a run-down house.
Mayella Ewell: 19-year-old daughter of Tom Ewell, and the accuser of Tom Robinson
Mrs. Dubose: Elderly woman that lives near the Finch house. Verbally harasses the kids.
Mrs. Merriweather: Organizer of the Halloween festival and performance.
Link Deas: Tom Robinson’s employer, and later Helen’s employer. Protects Helen from threats made by Bob Ewell.
Sheriff Heck Tate: Local law enforcement officer.
